that is so useful, thanks very much. No mention of rust on any of its previous advisories.
Failed on:
-Nearside Seat belt anchorage prescribed area strength or continuity significantly reduced sill
-Headlamp aim so that beam "kick up" is not visible on the screen both (they've restored the headlights)
Advisories:
-Nearside Front Shock absorbers light misting of oil or has limited damping effect
-Offside Front Shock absorbers light misting of oil or has limited damping effect
-Rear Service brake binding but not excessively -
@Dammit not sure, need to have a look on Saturday when I'm meant to get it!
@mcmyk that's what it failed on but its now been welded and passed.
@ricky2slicky I think it was the seatbelt mounting. I'm going to google if this was an issue with the mk5sCheers all. Would feel bad pulling out of the deal but it does seem a bit odd that this is necessary as the car bodywork looked really clean
-
golf needed £130's worth of welding to pass its mot something to do with the around seatbelt mount (not sure - is this a big warning sign?) (https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/140329/?offset=48325#comment14775396)
not sure if I should still go for it. I okayed the garage to do it for around £50-150 when they rang me yesterday, but the signed piece of paper says I'd have an MOT'd golf for £900, not £1030

@Pifko ended up going for it, was super clean for £900 and drove really well plus everything worked

@n3il I am moving to Derby from Sheffield with work this month. Can't see it being introduced in Derby (will check) and I usually get the train between Derby and Sheffield when I am between the two so hopefully will be okay even if they introduce it there
Edit: After 2020 the ‘most polluting’ buses, taxis, coaches and lorries will be discouraged from driving in areas of Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Derby and Southampton where air quality problems are seen to be ‘most serious’. However, the five Clean Air Zones (CAZs) will not affect private car owners, unlike London’s ULEZ. https://airqualitynews.com/2015/12/17/clean-air-zones-set-five-english-cities-2020/

still looking at honda jazzs for a small run about.
However, a friend's dad runs a garage and knows my criteria, and said I can have a 2L diesel mk5 golf (56 plate) with okay service history, 110k miles, newish cam belt and 12 months mot for £900. Seems like a reasonable deal and he's doing me a favour, so I wouldn't want to offer him any less than that.
Is it worth me trying to negotiate to get cost price servicing or tyres if it needs it or hasn't been done recently (oil change, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs ) so it will hopefully run perfectly for 1-2 years? -

I didn't even know headphone amplifiers and DACs were things. Complete novice. I'm after a decent pair of headphones and whilst my macbook pro may not need a DAC, would never have considered even looking into amplifiers.
I also need to consolidate and sort some speaker setups and Hifi systems at home next week, which I will speak about in the other thread. -
@freddo congratulations. looks perfect :)
-
@Regal it's a 1970s ref 6430 and it's tiny at 30.5mm. Would have been a big stretch for my grandparents when they got it for my dad's 21st. I have the box and papers.
Interestingly the Seiko was free from some kind of magazine or cigarette loyalty scheme and belonged to my great grandad. -
@Stonehedge cheers. I only ever wear it for a day at a time so I haven't really noticed if it loses a few minutes but it always seems fine. I'll wear it for a few days and see :)
-
@Stonehedge this has reminded me I really need to get this 1972 Seiko serviced (huge sentimental value also, doubt it's ever been serviced). Winner if I can get it done for not too much ££
-
@Soul enjoy! You test ridden one? I'm excited to get out on it in a few weeks
-
-
@hugo7 cheers. Just walked past one and it looked alright. Should be possible to find a clean 1.4 for not too much at all
-
@hugo7 Thanks very much!
My commute is 10 miles each way which I bike 4/5 days a week. Most of it is short journeys as you say, but it would be good to be able to fit 2x bikes in or get a roof rack. I visit uni mates at weekends quite a bit so some motorways other than just cornwall runs. I'm also 6ft5 so can't be too small.
Have thought about Kia/Mazda if I can find something clean at a good price
-
@ricky2slicky will take a look cheers and @TGR it'd be really expensive for me to insure but thanks for the shout
-
Seen some good advice on here and I am in a similar situation to some others.
I need to get a 1.4-1.6 ish (no bigger) petrol run about that may also do 2x cornwall trips a year from the midlands. Got about 2-4k to spend on something that won't be a money pit, won't be too expensive to insure and will be fine on fuel. Thinking some kind of 2004-2009ish golf/polo/leon/ibiza
Any ideas? Cheers

@ejay2.0 that's great! What work do they want doing that would justify it going to rolex rather than someone else? Needs a bezel!
I bought a cheap as chips fake daytona in kalkan many years ago and it is hilariously awful, don't think it even worked. Will dig it out tomorrow.
Interestingly, I complemented a motorbike dealer's (fake) tag monaco gulf a few weeks ago and felt like an idiot when he told me it was fake.
