Done it before by using adjustable spanner between bb and crank, jaws around bb spindle, tap handle, taper of jaws wedges crank arm off. Same as forked wedges above I guess.

I was going to do similar butchery to an old Raleigh until someone much more knowledgeable convinced me otherwise.
I was even going to get phil bb and raleigh threaded cups plus a tenner for the installation tool.
The rear dropout slots were 8mm so would have needed grinding to take new axle as well!

i have an old steel one off my Gf's Puch.
Front got nicked, sold the frame, have the rear.
