Just got back from my 4 days in Holland, between 50km and 100km each day at a leisurely pace. Weather was kind to me apart from 5 minutes of torrential rain/sleet as soon as I got off the ferry which completely soaked me through (had to change clothes under an awning in the ports carpark). Utrecht to Amsterdam was the most enjoyable leg, followed the Amstel river for quite a way stopping in villages for bread and cheese, blue sky all the way. Stayed in hostels in Rotterdam and Utrecht and rented a houseboat in Amsterdam as I figured I'd be sick of hostels at that point.
First bike tour and first solo holiday abroad and it all went pretty much without problems. Only minor issue was being told by the grumpy woman at harwich that I shouldn't have done rail and sail if I was bringing my bike as it had to be booked in as a vehicle. 15 minutes of computer faffing and £4 to amend my ticket and I was on my way.

I just bought an all-city space horse and it would fit your needs minus the disc brakes. I think the pre-built ones are just over a grand, unsure as I got mine seconf hand.
Another bike I was interested in was the Soma wolverine but they're hard to get over here and I think they're just sold as frames.

Nice job, I like both yours and @Verbs_&_Nouns space horses. This frame looks a lot nicer in the light blue rather than the current racing green. I'd been getting inspiration for it from the builds on radavist which are all silver/leather combos but it's easy to make it look a bit twee. black's winning me over for now although I still think some fat gumwalls will look pretty good.

Just picked up my new bike. The guy I bought it from has just put new bar tape and tyres on it which I'll probably swap for white and some 30c gumwalls. I was thinking about going tan brooks, leather tape and silver components but the black and white is growing on me. I have absolutely no money left now so it'll have to wait in any case. Also on the shopping list is a blackburn outpost front rack, VO moderniste bottle cages and some kind of mudguard, maybe longboards. -

Has anyone taken a bike on a rail replacement service before?
I'm travelling down to London this sunday to pick up a bike I won on ebay and there's no trains running between Chelmsford and Liverpool st. I need to get the bike from Plaistow to colchester and was planning to chuck it on the train but Crossrail works have thrown a spanner in. The Abelio Anglia website says no bikes allowed on a replacement bus service but I'm wondering if I might get away with it if I ask nicely.
The only other thing I could think of is getting a national express coach but they told me the bike must be dismantled and in a bike bag, which I don't have. Due to several conspiring circumstances, Sunday is the only day it's possible for me to pick it up.

Spending a few days in Holland at the end of the month. Does anyone have a good route for cycling from Amsterdam to the Hook? Probably going to stop for lunch and a wander in The Hague. Looks like the logical route is Hoofddorp -> Leiden -> Hague -> Hook. Strava autoroute gives me the comedy option of following the coast all the way which looks a bit too off-road. Getting an overnight ferry back so I've got all day to pootle down if there's places worth stopping to see.

Yeah the woman at the port was moaning that cyclists do it all the time and she wished they'd read the website more carefully. I wanted to say that perhaps if it's a constant problem then maybe the website isn't clear enough but I just wanted to get on the damn boat so I politely smiled and nodded. Out of the 7-8 cyclists going through check-in with me, there was another bloke solo-touring who'd done the same thing as me and we gave each other naughty schoolboy smirks through the booth.
Also if anyone's planning to stay in Rotterdam I really recommend Hostel Ani & Haakien, safe and easy bike storage, brilliant staff and a nice communal atmosphere.
