Does anyone have a garmin 965? My old 935 is dead and needs replacing. The new 965 has an amoled screen which I think turns off completely unless activated by a wrist movement, is that correct? If so is there a way to set it to always on, especially during activities?
For my old 935 I often put the watch on my bars (usually using the Tri kit mount) but obviously having a watch on the bars would make wrist movements impossible and I don’t want to faff pressing buttons to activate the screen.

I’m about to take ownership of my first ever mtb. My hope is that I will mainly use it to get into some xc racing but it’s first job will be a 4 day bike packing trip in mid June.
Are there any rules of thumb for setting up my position on an mtb. Since it’s xc/bike packing I was thinking I’d try to replicate the fit triangle I have on my cyclocross bike and then tinker from there. Does that sound reasonable?

But serious discussion should have moved past this point decades ago, if not for (even some of the smartest) people's stubborn refusal to integrate near certainties they find uncomfortable. We should be talking about the ethical implications of this all but inescapable realisation, and how to drag our primitive instinctual notions of morality towards something more evidence-based which would doubtless lead to better outcomes.
If you believe in a wholly deterministic universe, then surely talking about what we should be doing is moot. And feeling exasperated about society’s lack of interest in those ideas is as silly as it is inevitable.
I’m pretty sure derailing this thread is the meme at this point.

That’s the one. FAQ 2 says that the Scottish access code means it’s open to cyclists and, as I understand it, in recent years they have been swapping walking infrastructure for cycling (there are apparently quite a few styles in the western half). Apparently there is also a road cycling route but I wanted to follow the walking trail.
I stand corrected… I think wanlockhead is still highest village in the uk but it seems there are higher pubs.

Amazing that’s super useful, thank you.
@hippy the highest pub in the UK is right on the route and I plan to stop there on night 2 (my dads house is in the village).

So, it’s confirmed that I’ll be riding the Southern Upland Way (214mi route in Scotland) to celebrate my 40th. Despite having only ridden an mtb once in my life I’ve ordered a bike and now I need to think about kit. The last few pages have been super useful and I think if I need a rack it’ll have to be the OMM ekhorn, but are there any good packing lists I can use for inspiration?
I expect it will take 4 days/3 nights and I’ll camp for 2 of those (one I’ll stay at my Dads house which is en route). I’m already over budget on the bike so ideally I’d like to use what I’ve got but none of that is very lightweight 😳.
Suddenly I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing.

My hope was that this would be the first of many and that people would start developing cheaper alternatives. I’d love one.
I think I saw someone make a homemade one on YouTube but iirc he had trouble with the static pieces getting in the way. For example if you moved a knight on the opening move it would just barge through the pawns pushing them out of the way.

it exists!

I can’t play otb anymore. The pieces all look funny and I miss obvious moves.

I believe Oxfordshire (for example) has imposed a blanket 20 limit on all its villages.
I don’t know if this is true, but there is certainly a proliferation of new 20mph zones, including on several of our courses. The decision about whether a 20mph limit should be introduced seems to lie with the parish councils (source: my mum is a parish councillor and they recently caused a minor furore by implementing a 20mph limit for the picturesque expensive parts of the village while excluding the 70s developments who had apparently been requesting it… I think my mum is the only councillor who lives outside the zone).
Last time I went to a committee meeting our tt sec was saying that CTT would no longer insure any courses that ran through 20mph zones, but from the discussion on here it sounds like that is wrong (or has changed).

How much do basic 2nd hand bumper plates depreciate in value?
I just found a local seller on FB offering a set of Mirafit plates, but I just realised these 2nd hand plates are exactly the same price as buying new from Mirafit (once I mix and match colours). Plus buying new means I can choose exactly the set of plates I need which isn't true with the 2nd hand set.
If I were to make a counter offer how much would a reasonable reduction on RRP be? The photos suggest they are decent condition, so 75%?

Yeah I’d use hrTSS. I used to row but now only sit on an erg once or twice a year and my arms and core/posterior chain are definitely the limiters. Also rowing engages far more muscle groups than cycling so typically hr is higher for rowing than for cycling at any given RPE, so whatever you use you would want to base it off some baseline threshold test. I see no reason why a 20 min test wouldn’t get you in the correct ballpark.

I still know nothing about mountain biking, but I’m on the verge of buying a trek procalibre 9.6/9.5 to cycle the southern upland way. This thread reliably tells me I need a dropper post but I now need you to tell me which one…
I’m looking for something good value middle of the road sort of level. Think whatever the equivalent of 105 might be.
Sorry for all the questions, but since you have one, how do you find the screen? Do you think it’s worth the extra £150 for the (very similar) 955 solar. The main advantage is if it gives extra resolution with maps (especially on trails - say in the lakes or southern uplands) but I don’t have much experience with garmin maps as a baseline.
