I guess you're right - but I think there is something in having a figurehead/representative of the state that is above the party political system. The monarchy have always played that role (since parliament was formed and am in no way suggesting it's all been fine).

The Queen and monarchy allowed people to project their own image of Britain - whatever that may be. To combine a head of state role with a PM role seems dangerous to me, especially with populism so prevalent at the moment, so I'm interested in what an alternative model would look like.

To be clear - I'm in no way a monarchist and am interested not only in proportional representation but even more progressive models of participatory democracy such as citizen assemblies to move past the current, rather toxic and limited system. Just not sure what that would look like if the the monarchy was dissolved tomorrow.

That’s the sort of thing I was thinking about - checks and balances hence constitutional reform would be needed.

Celeb type role was poorly worded.

Genuine question - if the monarchy was abolished what would constitutional reform look like while ensuring there’s a separate, independent head of state to avoid a Trump/Bolsanaro type president figure?

Would people be happy for it to become a celeb type/ceremonial role like in other nations?

That’s been the only pro royalist argument that’s made me think about how the whole constitution would have to been rebuilt (which is arguably should be as has been failing for 10+ years).

Yep. Usually is my alarm but felt like I was being told to feel sad.

Is a momentous occasion in terms of history/a significant historical figure has passed away who oversaw or was a witness to a huge amount of social change so interesting times I guess but am avoiding any broadcast media for a week. And the local fb group - fucking hell.

It feels a bit like when Bowie died and everyone went mad for a bit, how they’d always been a fan and don’t talk about the noncing allegations.

Announce it as its happening so we all get to sing the song, banging kettles out the window like the good old days of 2020.
