I wasn’t expecting much of a difference tbh. But I had the mech as I’d foolishly bought it for the rockhopper (thinking the wheels were 9 speed) and the 10 speed wasn’t great as the chainrings weren’t designed for it, so I thought I’d try it. It’s a real revelation, just feels like it wants to shift either way and does so with far less effort and thought. Virtually no ghost shifting either, and if it ever does it just gets easier rather than harder.
I shall now be hoarding rapid rise mechs and keeping an eye out for if Riv ever put their own into production :)

After four weeks rolling round France on the Rockhopper, it felt very nice indeed to be back on the riv yesterday.

Riv has had a drivetrain upgrade. You might not like it, but this is what peak performance shifting looks like: 9 speed xt rapid rise rear mech, sora front and a fresh 46t chainring with ramps and pins. Rapid rise and friction shifters is the future.

A friend is looking for a road bike, both for general road riding and to do a triathlon on. Something racey, alu/carbon. A caad or trek alr would be perfect imo. Top end of budget would be 1k but would ideally like to spend less.

I have already recommended @Thrasher lovely Litespeed, but let me know if you’ve got anything that might fit the bill that you’re keen to move on!

@pascalo belated thanks for your reply- super useful. Beerfelden looks way out of my league and something of the level I’m not sure I have an appetite for! Odenwald looks promising though. Relatives live in Boxberg just outside Heidelberg, so my main plan is just to go and fart about on the Königstuhl trails.
The dilemma is that a trail bike would be overkill for almost all the riding it would see in the uk, whereas something more downcountry is likely to be a little undergunned on trips to Heidelberg. Ultimately, I think it’s more sensible to go with the latter for now. I’ll soon know if it’s a mistake and as long as I look second hand, shouldn’t lose too much if it turns out to be the wrong thing!

@lsinclair that would be great - will drop you a pm when we next head over, perhaps late October.

Ah, that is true. Roadrunner looks sweet. I’ve always liked the swift catalyst and the bagsxbird piccolo, but likewise not really economical from over here!

Lovely colour. Agree on the wrapping, then you can properly thrash it about without worrying about the paint.

Think Ultradynamico tyres would finish it off nicely. Indeed, a crust without them just might not look right.

This looks absolutely great! Flat pedal fun times are hard to beat.

Can’t help but feel it needs a witslingers frame bag (once the pump has moved) for a final forum touch, which would also leave lots of space for a fork crown mounted light…
