If you are running a CLI (terminal) version you might as well just use Debian. No reason to jump on the Ubuntu wagon then. Besides that, most of it is interchangable between the distro's since Ubuntu is based on Debian.
Seconded, you won't need all the bloat. If you really want a loonix 'hobby' then compile Gentoo. But maybe don't.
Debian's stable, light, and has a decent package manager that's easy to use.

What are a good set of tyres to keep in reserve if the weather starts to turn icy/snowy any time in the next few months?
Riding fixed, max clearance is really 30mm for slight knobblies (without guards).
Knowing that without going down the studded route, or getting another bike (too poor) you can't guarantee too much, what's the best tyre to keep me rolling?
Again I'm poor, so <= £20ish per tyre, ideally.
