    James, unless you have a darned good engineering rig I would suggest that you have pre-drilled rims.

    I'd have thought that a stock of 20's, 24's and 28's would suit 95%+ of scenarios.

    Just my 2c.

    I used to import quite a lot of carbon fibre wheelsets from Taiwan and they sold well. Like all businesses, you have to suss out the companies that produce quality goods.

    PM me for more info if required.

    Hurrumph. My aim is to be stronger, with quality commuting forming the majority of my mileage.

    That was my aim when first-born was on her way. I managed to get most of my miles in through cycle commuting.

    First-born in now 22 and I'm still getting most of my miles in through cycle commuting. D'oh!

    2.The tyres go flat within two days.

    Have they got latex tubes? These naturally seep air and lose quite a lot of pressure over a couple of days.

    Re:- slippery-ability-ness.
    Gatorskins give excellent life, and I suppose that the compromise may be lower grip. The lanes I commute on are either muddy, leafy, greasy or all three and so I probably expect all tyres to slip around a little. I did fall off (twice!) one morning last month, but that was more to do with the fact that the road had turned into an uncharted ice field rather than slippery tyres.

    Best tyre for what purpose?

    My faves are:-

    • 23mm Michelin Pro Races on the road bike.
    • Vittoria Corsa CX 21mm tubulars on the time trial machine.
    • 25mm Gatorskins on the commuter (virtually bombproof).

    @slimandy, I used a pair of Weinmann centre-pull brakes when I did a 70's conversion replacing 27" with 700c.
