I'm currently building a cheapie single-speed based on bits given to me by mates and stuff in my shed, I'm sort of stuck on gearing though. I was given a 52-39 chainring, both rings are ok, though the 39 is a bit rotten looking (it came from a winter bike).
I rode home (uphill) the other night on a 39-14 and it was fine, maybe a bit low for the flats but ok on hills. The equivalent for a 52 would be a 19 tooth sprocket, but the standard size of single sprockets seems to be 18 teeth. I'm going to use an old cassette to start with to get the gearing right then 'splash out' on a £6.99 single-speed specific cog.
Does anyone have experience of using old cassette sprockets? I've read they can be a bit jumpy. I'll be running the set-up with a Doofer as the drop-outs are vertical and the wheel is a Fulcrum Racing 7 with a freehub so it's not SS/Fixed specific.
Any advice (such as don't use a cassette sprocket or cassette sprockets are fine or use the 39 instead of the 52) would be welcome.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'm going to use the 52 with an 18 or 19 tooth rear. I've got a chain tensioner to go on.
What does a half-link do? I've got a standard Sram PC971 chain to go on it because that's what I've got!
