the rear derailleur is basically a spring loaded parallelogram and will move by whatever increment the actuating mechanism demands between the upper and lower range stops.
what is more important is matching the cassette with the lever and ensuring that a pull of x mm at the lever end translates to a movement of x mm at the cassette.
In my experience, a 2nd gen C-Record RD does not work with 8-speed ergopower levers and a Campy 8-speed cassette. I believe the issue is in the RD parallelogram - the 2nd gen is not a "slanted parallelogram" like later C-Records (or any modern RD, for that matter).
I think a 2nd gen C-Record and slanted version move a different amount per shifter click when used with indexed shifting. Come to think of it, I never seen a bike with a non-slanted RD and ergopower/sti levers.
Anyone else got these issues? I'd be glad to know I'm wrong and the problem is elsewhere - the slanted c-record RD's don't come cheap...
