On android it's controlled via menu at the bottom.
I'd say it's personal choice, but if I were buying for 10yo then I'd start with 2 brakes.
That bike should do the job.
I'd say avoid a gyro cable but I'm not sure any of the bikes with the better cable setup come with a front brake (they should)

Avoid 1 piece cranks & quill stems (not sure how obvious this is). I'd always buy 2nd hand myself.
I did London to Brighton on mine some years back. Thinking of doing it again, but on my race bmx with a brake.

Is the gear cable still in one piece?
Sometimes the head can get jammed in there depending on the STI
