    thanks so much for replies - bad news is that i think the nut is stripped, good news is that i whacked the cotter in with a hammer - very satisfying - and so now it's in properly (i think that's good news anyway, it means i can make it where i need to be tomorrow at least). i'm a bit concerned that the pin itself might be stripped too, but i guess that can be replaced at same time. might head to lock 7 at the weekend, that's a good plan...

    thanks, yeah, i read it earlier, the problem is that i suspect:

    If the bicycle is ridden with loose cotters, the motion of the crank will cause the axle to cut notches into the cotters, and it will become impossible to tighten them

    may be what has happened.... crap.

    i might just take the hammer to it, i'm at a baseline of the worst case scenario anyway...i.e. it all needs replacing and even worse i'd have to get the tube tomorrow...

    A while ago i had the chainring, cranks and pedals on my bike replaced by a shop, and ever since then one of the pedals has felt a bit wobbly and i could feel something clicking slightly every revolution of the pedal. On looking at it,the problem seems to be that the crank is attached a bit loosely, for want of a better description. If I hold the right crank steady, the left can still wiggle about a bit( as in, rotate around the bb) and also, which is probably related, the whole crank on the left hand side can slide away from the bb by about 5mm or so if you pull it, and goes back in again, which I'm sure isnt meant to be possible.

    The cranks are cottered and i can see that the nut on the left hand one isnt on straight, it's at an angle to the pin, is this likely to be the source of the problem?

    i could take it in to the same bike shop who set it up in the first place (the london bike repair place on hatfields) but that wouldn't be my preference. My only other local-ish shop is Evans on the Cut and last time It ook it there they said i'd have to replace the whole drivetrain and it would cost more than the bike's worth because they didn't have of the right parts to replace them ...

    Is this something i could fix myself or not really? Also , is it dangerous? It's annoying because I can feel it clicking under my foot every revolution but i've been riding 50+ miles a week on it for ages now with it clicking away to itself ,and it's been fine. A couple of friends have looked at it and deemed it roadworthy enough but in need of something doing eventually... and now I've just got fed up of it.

    Hahaha. No, it doesn't look anything very much like that at all - it is a differnet shape (mixte) and colour and it has moustache bars with, quite sadly, no 80s inspired tape.

    Ok,apologies, the picture may not have been very helpful - think you might be right and there's a qr lever going directly out of the picture. Mine are wingnuts, honest, like this.

    ah that's true of the front one, which i had totally missed. but the rear one has a wingnut, and mine are both like that.

    ha, ok, is that really unlikely then?

    it's a cyril guimard bike, of which there don't seem to be very many about, at least not in the uk, i found this one on velospace which is a different frame but the same make and has the same wingnut thing going on.
