Yes interesting, that’s helpful thanks, kind of confirms my reasons for hesitation- I would be doing the Holland bit too

Going out to Berlin early August and want to ride back , I was thinking of doing the eurovelo 2/ R1 / D3 route which all overlap. I like the idea of a way marked route so you can just plough on but am unsure about surfaces - info is that it is good but it all paved, the niceness of the ride itself and the feeling that these special paths might be a bit frustrating if busy / sedate. It came up in a guardian ten long distance routes and there are few very official websites but relatively few blogs etc

Any advice? Is it a waste? Would I be better off heading for the hills further south even if that’s meant less time on the bike?

Anyone fancy driving up with me a couple of days before, leaving the car and riding at a road training pace back to London? Then I would be happy to drive you, your bike, both, or an elected friend, back to London after the actual DD which I plan on doing with my wife on our tandem. Lemme know via pm

Thanks pit! I’m sorry I didn’t get out to tooting for your epic sale: I could have done with an easier gear! Anyone cleaned that NDW climb out of Burham in Medway?

Did some of the new north downs way route on Saturday. From Camberwell I followed the roadies out to the end of beddlestead lane then dropped down via the ridge on to the north downs way which i intended to follow to a little village just past Canterbury. I thought my gps would pick up the route there but it didn’t, this section being, as I discovered when I got to these...

    ... only for walkers.
I managed to bump down the steps and got to oxted then was annoyingly basically taken back to where I had left the roadies. I also managed to get lost and hit more steep steps, this time going up. I’d already done over 20 miles and a hike-a-Bike and I’d not started. My mood lifted after otford when the route got good and I had a lovely ride. At wye I thought the route could have gone a different way as there are some nice trails in the area but I understand why they take you to Canterbury. Anyway, 5 miles after that I stopped and had a cup of tea. Here’s some pics

This must be a loop. I was thinking Galicia and incorporating parts of the Camino Portuguese but I’m open to suggestions, ideally route contains some coast and lots of off road. Likely doing this August so not massive miles. 40 off road miles a day is plenty.
    Many thanks!
