Just moved into Cambridge - been years since I was last on LFGSS, didn't even realise there was a Cambridge group.

Am well up for another alley cat at the end of October even though I shall have no idea where i'm going :)

i always thought dipping steel in cold water after heating it made it more rigid ? maybe thats tempering or summat !

Yeah absolutely, sometimes called quenching, it makes it stronger but more brittle. Its something to do with altering the molecular structure to something more crystalline I think.

I would have thought that it's a more complex process than just brute force... wouldn't it cause stress corrosion cracking if you just bent aluminium?

I know on sheldon's site he says you can respace (bend) steel frames but strongly discourages the respacing of aluminium.

The second one makes me ill just looking at it, definately A.

Mind you, If you teamed B with some fluorescent puce wheels white handlebar tape and a gold chain you could probably sell it to the Unipack people for millions.

Mmmm I definately do this too, sometimes I have really crap days and get really down about cycling and think bugger it all why dont i just learn to drive like everyone else, but then a couple of weeks later there is always a nice morning ride in the sun when it's quiet and it makes it all worth it.

Also swapping bikes can quite muck you up, after 2 weeks on my fixed gear the road bike is weird and knackering and vice versa and after a couple of rides its ok again, I think it's not that you loose fitness but you are just in different positions and cadence and using slightly different muscles.

I have had only good experience with SJS in the past, the only thing I would say is that some products on the website could do with a more detailed description.
