Bit of a Thread Dredge, unsurprisingly what with the current down turn in the oil price a few folk have lost jobs, I have a mate who was recently made redundant and was wondering if anyone had any leads of jobs going? His degree is in Mechanical Engineering, he did a stint with Schlumberger working in the field doing Measuring While Drilling and more recently was working on Wellheads with FMC, he was also studying part time for a MSc in Drilling Engineering. I don't think he's expecting to dive into a fancy engineery job but would probably be happy doing grounds work or basically anything out doors! He's not put off by part time either! He's a good hard working lad so if you hear of anything it would be greatly appreciated.

A bit left field but have you considered air source heat pumps? Currently the government are offering interest free loans to install a system which would cover your heating and hot water needs, pay you back through the Renewable Heat Incentive and reduce you bills (although initially the savings would no doubt go towards servicing the loan). I was speaking to a chap last night who was selling it to my inlaws. The biggest pitfall I saw was that the loan stayed with you and not the house/system, so whilst the loan may take 10 years to pay back, if you move after 5 the rest of the loan would still be your responsibility whilst the new owners reap the benefit of the new system in place.

To paraphrase someone on TV he looks like the best dressed alcoholic in the off licence.

One thing you will want to look out for is how the new system effects your electricity Tarrifs? Currently we have a multi rate, cheap for heating and hot water and standard for everything else. I believe if we were to move away from Storage heaters we would have to move onto a standard tarrif. There are newer storage heaters on the market however which do offer a better level of control and would mean you could keep the cheap rate. Sorry I can't help you further but this is something I would be considering if I was changing out my current heaters.
