Depends exactly how you want to use it, for example
- I have openmediavault runnig on the pi3 that acts as a general network file server. This can be used to access files from any networked device
- I have Kodi set up with tv headend connected to my tv to act as a recorder, player, connected to netflix etc. This can use files either from its own connected storage or the networked openmediavault server
Perhaps Plex on pi may be the option that you are looking for.
where inputs need to be put into the terminal, just copy and paste them from the installation guide.
