Don't think there any difference. I taped mine as it's a bit more manageable for one person and easier to make sure everything is sealed. Plus it gives you that shiny inside spaceship feeling when it's all done.
the internal barrier is to stop the warm/moist air causing condensation on the way out through the wall.
@Hovis you have the foil sided insulation boards don't you? you just need to tape the seams / over the studs etc.
Wasn’t totally sure how I felt about this but then I read the following which sums it up pretty well:
