In answer to my own questions it turns out the wheelset I'd bought a while ago was for a traditional geared bike, my frame uses track sizing (120mm width) so I bought another wheelset which fitted this time.

Also replaced my gritty old bottom bracket which was the type with a fixed cup and ball bearings. Replaced with a sealed BB and all dandy again. New crank set, new pedals, new breakpads, new chain and my fixies looking fairly mint again

Sorry, should clarify- I mean skewers- not the axles themselves. Thanks!

Hi, I bought a complete fixie wheelset a couple of years ago and have just only got around to fitting them.

The wheels have a QR axle which is way too wide to fit my frame/dropout- it looks like it was designed for a bike with a rear cassette.

The question is, is axle sizing/'girth' standardised? I'll need to get new axles but want to make sure they're the right size. Not fussed about them being QR- if anything, non-QR would be preferable to avoid getting them nicked.

    Thanks
