Im not hugely experienced, im sure @coldharbour or @skant can give you a more comprehensive answer, but afaik tube stiffness is relative to diameter more than material. So oversize tubing will build a stiffer frame. It is certainly noticeable. I just built a frame with a 38mm dt. Compared to the frame i built prior to this with a 31.8mm down tube it is much stiffer.

i have a rear wheel if needed. bolt on Disc, 9 speed cassette attached. Basic ally alex rims rim and unbranded novatech-like hub.
cassette and disc rotor relatively little used.

Sounds good, Ive been thinking of doing grinduro scotland for a while but cant quite consider stumping up the funds atm.

haha yeah i took this photo pretty much just after building it up. Ive fiddled with the position a bit since, saddle and bars are more level now.
