+1, they're great.
Cheapo work stands are surprisingly hardy. What I find you get with a pricier stand is a clamp that is more pleasant to use.

It will work. You'll just have to find a cog on the cassette that doesn't make noise and put the trainer in erg mode.
Direct drive is way worth it over wheel on.
