  • Hadn't you just got into cycling when you joined the forum?
Quite some progression for less than a decade for an old timer ;)

  • Cheers

Started cycling to do charity ride for my 50th. Bought a fixed and joined the forum a year later. That ride to the Bec Hill Climb, nine years ago, was my first long fixed ride and almost killed me.

  • Well that was fun. Despite Oliver's no-show, we had a very jolly day out.

  • Sorry, all, my knee was playing up. Tried to go out and realised I shouldn't do a long ride today. I only pootled around locally for a bit.

  • You weren't missed. It wasn't a long ride. Just a gentle 100km.

  • Hope you are having a great birthday weekend, am guessing your gift to Irene was your absence from the house!

  • You weren't missed

    Oooooh! Handbags!

  • Oh dear. I must confess that that was an error of predictive text but it does come across as a rather vicious swipe at dear Oliver and for that I apologise.

  • Vicious swipes are good between friends,, thanks for a nice meandering ride Clive, your in depth knowledge of pampas grass and churches was impressive, the DNA trail, the cafe,,,a puncture, and mechanical added to the day,,,, thank you,,

  • sorry I couldn't join clive but a birthday on the family meant being out of town.

happy birthday dude. and massive respect for doing it right

  • thanks for organising this Clive. We arrived at the Espresso Library a little before 5pm & I needed to get the 17:26 train back so that I wouldn't inccur the wrath of mrs conker. So a quick cuppa & very tasty toasted chiabatta & I was off. Thankfully it was only 4mins to the station. When I got off the train at Finsbury Pk I had a flat tyre, so with a scolding from the redoubtable mrs C in mind, I pumped up the tyre & hoped for the best. About half way home it needed re-inflating. Arrived home 7pm riding on the wheel rim. Showered, shaved, dressed & out the door by 7:20.

She wasn't happy but couldn't really argue as we got to the restaurant on time. Great meal anyway, so all forgotten after a while & a wine.

Nice photo Clive (#28) My three photos are so awful it's not worth uploading them

  • Glad you made it ian and thanks deeply to you all for your patience waiting for me. You'll be glad to know that I've bought some carbon assembly paste after losing 5cm of seatpost between setting out and returning. Not a good combination with security bolts (which have now also been removed!)

Sore knees today but contemplating riding the route again solo next week to prove I can!

Clive, I've no idea how you made it there and back every day. Happy birthday for tomorrow!

  • Dear Clive,
many happy returns and well done a super effort. I am up for a ride this autumn with your good self and Oliver to the Essex lanes, now that I've got my road bike back in action, with a test ride to Brighton this morning. I might bring @OneLessCardigan

    Best always
    Alan

  • Happy birthday, big lad. Keep doing what you're doing.

  • Looks like you celebrated your b'day in style @WornCleat....would have loved to joined you but was AWOL on the continent. Hope to see you soon

  • Thanks everyone. Really enjoyed the ride on Saturday. It reminded me how much I enjoy cycling. My 2000 km became a bit of an endurance event. It was nice just to ride gently for the sake of riding, take in the view, have conversation and arrive somewhere and get out of the wet and cold and onto a train.

  • Happy 60th Clive. Glad you enjoyed the ride, sorry I couldn't join you.

  • Ha, classic. :)
