  • So many weird and wonderful players. I had a pretty posh Sony MD player with the stick screen that you twisted to control the music, just the coolest thing on earth at the time. Technology is fucking boring these days.

  • This has made me very nostalgic. Maybe this is our generation’s of ’who remembers proper binmen?’ posts on Facebook.

  • I always really liked how they incorporated the battery size into the design of all these players.

  • Baaaaaanger. I had this and a EJ785 CD player. Fucking loved them both. CD player died, and then I replaced the MD with a this red beast. Just fucking…..LOOK AT IT! ATRAC compression let me store stupid amounts of music. Skipped a lot and the Software was horrifying to use.

  • I was all over these. Minidisc.org has some good info. I had a Sony MZ-R700, and Sony MDS-JE480 separates deck in my hifi at the time. Student loan well spent.

  • Thinking back to the time I spent adding track names manually skipping forward and backward through the alphabet!

Oh bloody hell, forgot about that!

There was a TV ad of someone dropping a MD out the window then a youth skateboarding over it, picking it up and putting it in their player. It was cheesy but obviously effective if I still remember it.

  • I coveted one of the home decks that a socket on the front for a PC keyboard.

(PS/2, none of this USB nonsense)

  • My MD micro hifi could do impeccably seamless A->B repeats, I used to loop guitar parts my bandmate sent me to write second guitar parts. Probably did a whole album like this!

  • this deck is phenomenal

  • Yes! A housemate at uni had the deck with PS2 keyboard socket, was an absolute treat naming tracks with that compared to my portable kit.

  • That was the UK band Reef and their first single Good Feeling.

That advert led me to order the self-released single (on 7” vinyl ironically) by writing to their home address as I remember.

  • My mate has/had a minidisc 4-track recorder. It needed a different type of minidisc unfortunately meaning if you still had to output to a different format.

  • Yeah, had one of these ones, 40gb of atrac, later updated to run mp3s and other formats and eventually video iirc. Sit it in that cradle and it output a decent signal as well

  • Oh wow. Feel like I have forgotten about this whole format, then as soon as I saw the title instantly remembered my Sony N710 portable with the diagonal screen and inline controller.

It makes you kick your self for keeping up with consumerism and unknowingly walking in to this dystopian streaming world we have found our selves in.

  • That's a solid arrangement.

  • I haven't bought any in years as I have so many. I used to record my mixes onto minidisc and then usually transfer to DAT tape after I'd finished any editing, so I could just wipe the mini discs again.

  • I had this exact model but in blue - it was so cool at the time - loved it.

  • Here's mine, an Aiwa (remember them?) AM-F65. I think the AM-F70 was a step up from mine and had a backlit screen on the inline remote. I definitely remember the super fragile optical cable to get the best recordings (and automatic track division?).

I've been testing it with Audioslave's eponymous debut album, which was very contemporary to my use of the MD player, and still absolutely rocks. Pretty much all of mine were copied from CDs which obviously makes me a terrible pirate.

    Vans sticker because teenager.

  • I still have this somewhere, excellent, it’s an additional battery attachment on the side.

  • I also had one of these, MD dictaphone with variable play back speeds. Was very good, sold it on eBay a few years ago sadly.

  • Would anyone have interest in a hi-fi minidisc player, to go with a separates system? Can dig out details tomorrow.

  • Yes! Will pm to find out where in the queue for it I will be?

  • What’s the hell even is that??? Is it an MD?? I’ve never seen that before.
