• We live in a small flat in Southwark, and the single worst thing about living here is bringing bikes through the house to the garden every day (at least we have the garden, ofc). I've requested a hangar installed (https://cyclehangarsinsouthwark.commonplace.is/comments) but my faith in UK governance is at an all time low..

How possible would it be to buy my own bikehangar and bolt it to the street outside my house? Are there any bits of pavement that are privately owned? Has anyone ever found a way to (ethically) shortcut the existing bikehangar waiting lists?

  • Buy an old van?

  • an intriguing idea.. but it would have to be taxed, MOTed, and insured to be on the road right? Even parked?

  • Yeah, a van on the street would have to be taxed. I doubt that you’ll get away with constructing something for long unless the council are OK with it. Talk to your local councillor?

  • another good shout, thanks! have emailed them now

  • Are there any bits of pavement that are privately owned

Bolt it in a parking space and invite neighbours to share it with you.

Then inform the council. If they have issue, offer to pay the annual residents parking fee for the space
