What does this screw do?...

  • Absolute noob question...

For months my brake lever hadn't been returning to it's proper position. Assumed this was because the cables needed changing.

Did this and it didn't work. However, I loosened this screw, that holds the whole assembly together, a touch and covered it all in GT85 and it seems to be working okay now.

If I tighten this screw back up then the problem re-occurs, so I need to leave this screw not entirely tightened.

It is all going to fall apart while I ride down Denmark Hill and result in my premature death?

Usually the answer a joking ‘haha yes’, but in the case of that screw it’s a straightforward ‘well, it is certainly possible’ (although we would hope not, of course). Joking follow-up is that at least Kings Hospital is at the bottom of Denmark Hill 🚑.

I just loosened the nut and bolt on this skeletonised potenza front calliper, and it takes effort. My calliper works fine.

  • I’d try disconnecting and taking the calliper off of the fork, and making it close by hand. You can pick up on any friction, tightness or loose parts more easily that way. It might be that there’s grit creating too much friction, or it could be an issue with the central bolt being loose. Usually, loosening that joint creates enough play to be able to ignore the first cause of the problem, until it all comes apart for one reason or another.

  • Cheers man. Interestingly, mine doesn’t have a nut at the back…

To be honest, the whole bike is well overdue a strip down and clean/grease so maybe now is the time.
