Only to be used with traditional star nut in case of alloy / steel steerers. In case of carbon steerers you can only use it with the Enve compression plug.
I had the original version myself which I like better as it's matte and smooth instead of the new stepped design. Unfortunately I snapped it during a crash.
I'd like a hammered one but don't have the bike to match really. I'm using the original Chris King top caps.

If it was rotated 90 degrees then you would just need to lean the bike sideways to avoid the beer going everywhere.
Photo wouldn't look as neat though.
