Square taper, 68mm bb, ideally sealed unit thingy rather than shell / axle / bearings*, single or double, likely need postage...
*...most importantly supercheap or freebie :) for a 1950’s beater BSA that will need to live outdoors as the stand-in replacement for fam commute Kona that was stolen last night grrr f*ucker thieves.
But before my time but would that be a 68mm English threaded BB? Back in my day (70's) 70mm BB would be Italian.
My bad, yes 68, too many things on my tiny mind.
Raleigh took over BSA in 1957 so it may have a Raleigh 71mm 26 TPI threaded shell.
Oh, thanks, there’s a thing. Right, I’d better measure a bit more carefully. Be right back.
Mr Venier Caiipers confirms 71mm. Thanks man, that might explain why the disaster bb in there doesn’t look too happy, the lock nut on the driveside is a few mm adrift as well.
Any tips as to what to hunt for here, or am I better off sticking with axle and cups?
And a quick dive into SheldonBrown, the drop-outs have the mudguard fixings lower down, so definitely sounds like a Raleigh build.
I think you are stuck with good old cup and cone, square taper axle might be tricky....
Cheap threadless BB?
Square taper Raleigh BBs are a thing.

Right-o, thanks all. @Rik_Van_Looy, going to get one of those Firecloud ones, good spot. At £9 it’s worth a punt :)
I have a better one for you, for a 68mm shell and 110mm width. Only £7 posted. Cancel the order.
Ah, but that won’t fit the 71mm shell and 26Tpi threads properly?
Well, the bb from firecloud arrived (free postage also), have just fitted (thankfully the old bb wasn’t seized which is amazing given it appears whoever fitted it didn’t use any grease and the bike lived outdoors for a year) and it’s perfect. So for £9 everyone’s happy.
Good work. Enjoy the new commuter- ride safe
Test ride just now.
Comes complete with a full bag of clicks and squeaks lol
Good fun though.
Ohhh, never heard of that outfit, I usually go to bankruptbikeparts for cheap bb's n stuff.
Lots of good comms from them also, will be buying again.
