Sturmey SRF5(W) axle too short.

Posted on
  • Trying to set up a Sturmey srf5(W) on a mate’s bike and it seems the axle is too short.

Wonder if anyone has come across this issue before?

With the the non turn washer and fulcrum arm in place, the axle doesn’t project into the window in the nut so I can’t index the gears.

The frame is ali so the track ends are sort of thick but far from the thickest I’ve seen and even with only one of the non turn washer or fulcrum arm in place the axle is still barely reaching the window.

    Without the non turn washer...

  • With the ntw in place...

  • I think you’ve got incompatible parts on there. That fulcrum lever isn’t compatible with the lock nut. The fulcrum levers with the spacer on them (pictured) are installed with the black plastic guide pulley. The lever you need for that lock nut doesn’t have that spacer on it.

Edit- I haven’t worked on a Sturmey archer in >4 months, so I’m not sure if it’s actually different levers or if the spacer between the lever and the lock nut can be removed. If the latter, just do that.

  • They do 2 axle lengths on the 5 speed, what’s the measurement?

  • With the same oln?

Not sure what this one was tbh but it's not like there was anything on the inside of the track end that could have been removed (frame being ali means it couldn't have been set in anyway).

There was a shaped washer spot welded or something to the fulcrum arm that I managed to remove and that gave me enough room to just see the end of the axle in the window (plenty of thread engagement too) so set it up that way.

What a faff compared to other IGHs I've owned/worked on though.

Sachs 3 speed I used to own had a nice qr thing on the cable/control chain so it was dead easy to separate the wheel from the bike.

I had to cut a slot in the Sturmey fulcrum where the adjuster threads in so that taking the wheel off the bike isn't a ten minute job.

The Sturmey thumbshifter had a ton of slop in it too, pretty unsatisfying to use.
