Travel to Fort William

  • Hi,

I'm currently exploring a number of the options to get a bike up to Scotland in September, Been flip flopping between flying to train/sleeper train.

I would ideally like to travel by train, less disassembly of bike, less carbon emissions etc.
Has anyone done this trip before? Does anyone have any recommendations?

  • Hey,

I'm from Scotland but live in London, done the trip home maybe 20 times. I'd never consider flying again - by the time you factor in transport to and from the airport, as well as checking in your bike. It's more expensive and takes just as long.

The sleeper train is fast and affordable if you're up for sleeping in a reclining chair. Taking your bike couldn't be easier. Would recommend it. (Note: it can be freezing cold in winter)

No idea whether this has been delayed by covid. But looks promising from Glasgow onwards, if not. Drop Scotrail customer services a line to check?

+1 for the sleeper train though. If only because I want to do this at some point.

  • Absolutely take the sleeper, it's extremely convenient.
It isn't dirt cheap, but a proper adventure.
Maybe I'm soft, but I've always taken the cheap cabin, it only takes one snorer in the communal seated area to make sleeping impossible, I would believe.

  • it only takes one snorer in the communal seated area to make sleeping impossible, I would believe a hipflask of whiskey and a pair of earplugs to make sleeping through anything possible.

  • I’ve only done the Caledonian Sleeper once to Fort William, midnight departure, awake at Edinburgh, breakfast in silence and awe as we travelled through stunning countryside. Hands down best train journey experience in my life. Okay Interlaken to Grindewald through a snowstorm was pretty epic too.
