Keen to hear recommendations for cafe locks. Use cases I am thinking of here is out on a ride out of central or locking overnight when touring - emphasis on lightness and portability.
Some reviews found at links below but keen to hear personal recommendations:
I've used the HipLok Z Lok on tour before, pretty nifty but they don't last very long & it really only is a deterrent against true opportunists. Did give me a little peace of mind though.
I've got a pair of these and usually carry one on my road bike for solo rides. I've hardly used it in anger though TBH.
Why do you say they don't last very long? Does the locking mechanism eventually fail?
The keys are pretty fragile (snapped one just on my keychain) & the ratchets on the zip bit just wear away after a while, to the extent where you can just yank it open. Would probably last longer if you put the key in the close it, so that could've been user error.
I used to have a thin steel cord with a loop at both ends like this. If you were to carry a long-shackle padlock you could use the padlock to lock the chainring to a stay or spoke and then use the cord to go round a railing if there is one. That way, if they cut the cord with pliers, they still can't ride the bike away without taking an angle grinder or bolt-cutters to the padlock.
I have one of these, which has the bonus of not needing keys or anything. I haven't had to use it in anger either, and its definitely not secure, but enough to stop someone walking off with it at least
Good to know, thanks. I guess I'll have to keep an eye on mine.
There's a combination lock version of these as well that I guess wouldn't have the same problem.
Something like a padlock alarm or an alarmed cafe lock? E.g. http://www.personalalarms.com/cgi-bin/sh000002.pl?WD=lock%20alarm&PN=copy_of_Minder_Padlock_Alarm_%2d_Ideal_to_Prevent_Oil_Diesel_Theft%2ehtml#SID=259?a548
Have seen people recommend things like the latter on the CTC forums as a touring lock.
The newer Z Locks have a code lock so no more keys to lose or bend
