Just down the road from me in Southampton :( RIP
Not again. Grim news.
Sad news again. RIP rider.
I’m from Southampton and rode round there the other week on a revisit by bike. The cycle path is grim and from memory goes up onto the pavement and back onto the road. It’s close to the Itchen bridge, one of the main routes into the city and the docks, although it is the cruise terminal end rather than the container terminal end. Outside of Covid it would be stationary traffic in rush hour and busy at all other times. Acliff would know more accurately of course..
Just came off the phone with a cyclist friend who is 43 and who lives down that way, because I had a sudden panic it was him. Fortunately not, but he has some friends that age who commutes over itchen bridge every day, so he's planning some phone calls too.
There is an odd one way / counter flow system around there, as well as a car park in the middle of it, so not sure what happened yet, but its really shaken up my Southampton cycling friends.
I have an idea what it seems to have been from the pictures, but in this thread we shouldn't speculate on what happened. There may be further reports in the local press, and it would be good if someone who sees them could post them.
RIP unknown rider.
