Brakes on a fixie?

Posted on
  • Hi guys, new here and looking for some advice. Was given a free fixie the other week which sadly was too far gone to be useable, so purchased a new dolan frame and decided to build up my own. Biggest concern is the brakes. Looking at using tektro rl721 cross levers and just wondering what brake will work with this? I was looking at ultegra 6800 and their slr brake lever however didn't like the look of flats and my drops don't have enough space to fit the lever apart from next to stem at 31.8mm. Any of you guys using this lever??

  • Those levers will work ok with any calliper brakes. It will do the job fine, tektro are pretty reliable.

What do you mean your handlebars don’t have enough space to fit the lever? Tektro rl721s are designed to fit next/close to the stem. The clamp diameter is 31.8.

  • That's cool thanks for clearing that up. And what I meant was the specific brake lever shimano sell for use on flat bars has a 22mm clamp and on my drops there is just not enough space to have the lever in place and still ride on the top of my bars. That why I was looking at the tektros to fit next to my stem. I have just re read that and realised it was not so clear. Thanks again.
