• Hey guys, as the title suggests, I'm looking for some advice, I have a relatively stock Surly Steamroller which I love but have recently moved and it's a struggle to commute on now due to how hilly the area is. I looked at buying a new setup but I am intrigued about potentially putting a 3/8 speed hub on it with a gates carbon belt. Can anyone help out where I'd be best to look to figure out if this would be possible / what i'd need to buy. I'm relatively mechanically inept and looking for any suggestions or advice! Thanks in advance

  • You would have to have a break in the seat stay to fit the gates carbon belt.

  • Ah that sucks, maybe not then! Do you have any suggestions for converting the steamroller away from single speed but keeping it low maintenance?

  • add mudguards with 3 flaps, change chains often they are only about £7

  • Bob Jackson or Ben @ kinetics can do it. Don’t. £500 minimum from now to get your bike set. Just get full guards, flaps on the floor. Clean it as often as you can.

Could get a wheel built up around a Shimano nexus 8 speed and squeeze it in. Doesn’t work out too cheap though - might be easier to get a new, geared bike.

    Boring I know.

  • 126mm-130mm Road hub in back , rear cold set and cheap 1x7,8,9,10 set up ?

  • Sturmey Archer 3 speed IHG seems to be the common mod on the 'roller?

  • I’m currently building a similar project converting a surly SS to SA five speed without too many issues.
