  • A lazy google about concern over Starmer's backers reveals only a story in the Murdoch Times.

Can we be sure this isn't disinformation? Whose estimate is it that 'he has spent £1 million so far'?

At £387,000, as declared by Long Bailey, it's clear that campaigning doesn't come cheap.

  • Well, easiest way to deal with it is to just publish his backers, ala RL-B. Ideally before the vote closes. All done and dusted then.

  • Glad to see some support for Nandy on here, and also her rise in the polls. I was torn because I didn't want to split the Starmer vote and posssibly allow Long-Bailey in. Now confident a vote for Nandy will count. Vote Nandy! :)

  • Preferential vote system means that you can’t “split” the vote. Vote for you preferred candidate first and your second second.

  • Why's Starmer dubious about publishing his backers? Answer, after some waffle about parliament rules slowing it down (doesn't seem to have slowed RLB down) is that he'll do it only after most votes have gone in?

If withholding information from people that may influence their vote is gonna be his modus operandi, then I'm not sure I can support him.

  • My thoughts exactly. He is third on my list.

  • Again, an attack from those (McCluskey) who don't want Starmer to succeed. If there was any thought that Starmer was being funded by shadowy figures like (in the US) the Koch brothers, then we would indeed like to know. Starmer's numbers ARE on the register of members' interests.

When things that haven't shown up there (they are current to early Feb) appear we're likely to see a tally not unlike that of RLB. RLB has outed herself on this because she's had a LOT of money from Unite and seeks to make it look like she's being really open and the others have something to hide rather than face attacks that she is being darkly funded.

I'm all for open books all round*; I just think that this one is more about slating the opposition with innuendo rather than any real suggestion that Starmer is backed by dark forces.

*The books ARE open, and KS is also right to say the Members' Interests thing doesn't update daily. He'll be on the ropes if the next update shows the hand of compromising interests; I very much doubt it.

  • On the ropes, but with most members having already voted, I doubt he'll be that bothered, no? He'll have it in the bag. I still don't think it looks good on him, but thats the way its gonna be, I suppose.

Also, Starmers gonna have to get used to being questioned and pretty sharpish, because once he wins and the papers start firing broadsides at him every day about everything and anything he's done, he'll have to deal with it.

  • Agreed. I just don't think it's a big deal.

EDIT: Well, yes, the inevitable press broadside will no doubt be a big thing whatever Starmer does.

I'm no longer a Labour member, nevertheless I'm watching with interest. And I'll be the first to yell if it turns out there are agencies behind KS that would have altered anything if we had known.

BTW (OT), anyone else notice that the 'Seventeen things Bernie Sanders believes' thing on the BBC website this morning had become 'Eighteen things Bernie Sanders believes' by lunchtime.

    The 18th thing?

Critical of Israel - but also very proud of being Jewish. At a Democratic debate Sanders said: "Sadly, tragically, Israel has a reactionary racist who is now running that country."

  • At a Democratic debate Sanders said: "Sadly, tragically, Britain has a reactionary racist who is now running that country."

    FTFY

  • If withholding information from people that may influence their vote is gonna be his modus operandi, then I'm not sure I can support him.

Starmer may be withholding info about supporters associated with the moderate wing of the party, or who were part of a Labour government, it's sad that the hatred from the hard left toward them has led to this

  • I'm sorry but this is clutching at straws

  • "thing I think happened to support my bullshit sense of victimhood definitely happened, film at eleven!"

    Go away.

  • Notoriously both a vote winner and a decent moral position

  • Point 4? I agree it's a vote winner, the moral position is rather more nuanced I submit.

  • I was being sarcastic! Placing 'controls on immigration' at the forefront of its electoral strategy is unlikely to regain Labour much support in my opinion: it didn't do Ed any favours in 2015 and it's only likely to alienate voters in the areas in which Labour's support is now most concentrated. More importantly the labour party and movement should hope and aim for better than policies like these which always play into anti-immigrant rhetoric

  • I'm sorry but this is clutching at straws

My take on the Starmer situation is conjecture, for sure. No need to be sorry ;)

  • Funnily enough, I reckon Starmer is probably Ed Milliband mk2.

  • Should it concern us that Starmer is significantly more at risk from Covid 19 fatality due to age and gender than either of the other candidates?

  • Just found my ballot email in spam.

    Check your spam.

  • Nandy is on record consistently saying that the Milliband approach to immigration was appalling. If you read that link she is saying that while we mustn't do that again, we also can't go around pointing at everyone who is worried about immigration and calling them racist, a) because they aren't and may have some legitimate views that can be dealt with in other ways than more 'immigration controls' and b) because going around labelling the majority of the population as racist isn't a very good way to win elections, as we have just found out

  • going around labelling the majority of the population as racist isn't a very good way to win elections, as we have just found out

Exactly this. Self righteous name calling from remainers ensured no leavers were won round and people gravitated toward the tories.
