Returned the Hightower today, mentioned that I found the tyres a bit slow- chap told me that all bikes other than pure XC machines were now running Minion DHR style knobblies - did I miss the memo?

I've got a Rocket Ron on the back and a Hans Dampf on the front, they roll a lot faster than the Maxxis Minions I have to say.

Nah, he's just living in his own little riding bubble, where all of his mtb bros do the same thing as him

His suggestion was that the tyres I have on the Scalpel are out and out XC - which I suppose might explain the look of horror on the face of the chap who spotted the Rocjet Ron on the back when I met him at the top of a climb/highly technical descent in the Lake District.

Maybe the Ron is XC, but I think the Hans Dampfs were @Howard 's choice of tyre for Bike Park Wales?

Minions are DH tyres, and while they're great and really grippy, they're about as overkill* for most southern trails as a Hightower

*unless you frequent Aston Hill, or ride the scary steep stuff that @t_w enjoys

Anything > 2.25" is not XC

I did think that the Hightower on it's Minions had more grip around Swinley, but I'd take the Scalpels faster roll over the Minions grip around those trails.
