Sidewall problems

We don't seem to have a general thread on sidewall problems, unless I've missed something.

I had a small blowout tonight, which was very annoying as it happened on the way to one of my favourite events, too far away to walk there, too late to still find bike shops open, and delayed me enough, having to walk back home, to make it not worthwhile to still go.

As with many sidewall problems, I now realise (and should have realised much earlier) that it was probably caused by brake rub I had recently when I failed to renew my brake blocks early enough. So basic, but I still get that sort of thing wrong, despite supposedly knowing about it.
