Well, rigid would be much lighter than the current fork, and probably about as effective as that old thing :-)
Maybe something like an Exotic?

That’s what I’m looking at. I want something 3K Carbon, but it needs Canti/V-brake mounts
-
• #54
A full sus frame with no front bounce is stupid, but then so is URT, so wahey!
-
• #55
pffft... you'll be saying this was a bad idea next.

-
• #56
Here's the answer. Fit a 29er front wheel!

My vote is not to ruin it. It's survived this long all original. It's cool as it stands and saving a bit of weight whilst turning it into something anti seems like a waste to me.

Shit... I mean Retro MTB thread >>>>

I kind of want to have some fun with it. I think I’m going to change out nearly all of the components, but since everything on it is original, I’ll be keeping all of it, should I choose to rebuild into a retro MTB, or sell it with it’s original bits.
I probably won’t be using it for its intended use case - unfortunately. I think that lighter, stiffer forks will make the bike much more usable, for what I want to do with it, but obviously if it does veer into anti, I’ll always have the original parts.

@BareNecessities Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the Exotic forks. I’ve looked into them and found exactly what I want: 26” fork, rigid, carbon, fat tyre clearance, and v-brake mounts. That was easier than I expected.

• #61
Cool. Now you just need a nice rigid frame to go with it ;-)
-
• #62
Ahaha - well, on this one I need the rear suspension looking at. I believe it’s leaking air, very slowly.
I’m looking at ~55% sag on the rear shock, though I inflated the rear shock to 270psi on Friday, so I’ll have to have that properly serviced.

• #63
Fair enough, a bike you use and like always beats one you don't.
-
• #64
My thinking exactly. Also, how I’m picturing this, it will actually look pretty sick
-
• #65
Okay so I think that my general direction for this project is just going to be to carbon-ify this bike. Carbon bars, stem, seatpost, brakes, etc. I think it would go much nicer than the silver bits that are currently on there.

If you're going rigid front then go rigid rear, get a link made to replace the shock. Then 800mm bars and fat slicks and make it into a bizarre-o fixy skidder?
-
• #67
Then throw it in the bin and get a bike that hasn't been immolated.
-
• #68
Sounds like a plan

Then throw it in the bin and get a bike that hasn't been immolated.
Nah, I want to see this. It's got to be at least 10x better than anything Amey's ever built.

• #70
Just gotta keep da squish! None of this rigid nonsense.
-
• #71
Going rigid rear doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but to be fair I think it would feel scary as fuck to ride without rear sus.
Will either have the rear-sus serviced, or replace it with a more modern one for the sake of decent performance, and not snapping the tiny bit of seat tube this bike is endowed with.

What is the current fork? Maybe some older Rockshox SID air forks would save some weight, and give you more usable suspension.
I think they came out around 98, so not too far out.
-
• #74
The current forks are Rockshox Judy XC. They are some pretty light forks, since they have suspension, and we’re made 22 years ago: 1600g, if my research is correct.

New set of RS-1s and a Super Deluxe would be incredible if you felt like splashing out?
Or this if you're feeling more sensible...

Okay. Really crazy idea I’m throwing out there. Since any serious hills are to be tackled on my Kona, could I make this a hard-nose without landing it in Anti?
