  • After loosing 2 pairs of v expensive bluetooth headphones I got a pair with a clip on the cord that atatches to the back of your collar. Such a simple idea that they all should come with. I'm sure you could make one out of a lil alligator clip from an office store or junk shop. I ride 9 hours a weekday day so podcasts and shit keep me sane... always with one earbud out for the safety obviously.

  • That’s what mine are like. They are also magnetic on the rear of ear pods so clip together like a knecklace when out of ear.

  • Found loads in the attic sorted for the rear wheel to eat a few more.
Won't chance the blue set, don't fit over my helmet and might be hard for back wheel to digest :)

  • Kinda migrated over to the Time Trialling thread for a bit.

Had a wild stab at 10mile TT first go was under 32mins, second go with shedding some weight off the bike was under 30mins...... a "29" :)

With some tips on the TT thread and the suggestion I shave my legs a "28" min time should be doable.
How to make a Steamroller more Aero :)

    Step one buy things.
Decent inner tubes with out patches and less than 15 years old is a good start, being used to mountain bikes I had forgotten how dinky road tubes are.
    Go fast gel and tablets.
    Bright orange bartape.
Forgot to order the cheap saddle on sale...... dammit...... was going to try it out and if comfy I was going to strip down an old one, shed some weight as I am only going to sit on it for less than 30mins.

Coming from SJS, brake cables, new stem, aero bar end brake levers and a 13t sprocket, should shed another 1/4 kilo with that lot.

  • Lost half a Scoblebrick on the bars with the new stem :)

Going to ride this for a week then fit Aero bars. As the aero bars are not height adjustable I needed the stem height.

Bought a 13t Gusset sprocket for later on for a 10mile TT attempt.
Going to smack the 15t on now and have the 16t dicta freewheel as back up for commuting duties.

  • 13t Gusset sprocket. Very nice. Unused got in for a 10 TT attempt.
15t SJS el'cheapo, a stamped out item that required some filing and buffing of edges...….. was cheap though.
16t SJS chromed sprocket, quite nicely finished.
18t Gusset, again very nicely finished and still fairly cheap.

Brand x or x tools chain whip. cheap and rather good.
Condor track tool, can be had a few quid cheaper unbranded online, I bought in shop, did have a chain attached but got in way of doing up lock rings so chopped that off.
Always handy to have spare nuts, 10mm weldtite.

The 16t Dicta freewheel is on Beik. Shimano 18t and Sturmey Archer 22t. Out of the 3..... I would now go Sturmey Archer as better build quality than shimano and much cheaper. Wouldn't kick a dicta off the bike and would pick Dicta over Shimano as both have slight wobbles at huge price gap.

The life of SS and fixed on a budget. If I decide on a happy gear I might get a Dura Ace sprocket. Although for what I am doing I roughly got 4 sprockets for what one Dura Ace will cost.

  • Kinda got the feel for 15x42 fixed so put the old TT bars on for a quick test spin.

Didn't expect this to happen...…. dark glasses in the shade found the narrow slot.
was only doing a few mph as it's a 90 o right turn off the little bridge.

  • Everything seemed ok.
got to the road and wound up to 25mph, was mashing a bit so backed off, was able to easily cruise at 21.
Tried the TT bars, got down and head position was better with the higher stem but body felt cramped up. Could work on that, maybe.

Got up and down from the TT bars a few times ok, steering feels different but would quickly get used to that.
Bit of chain noise. Chain line is ok with freewheels but slightly off with this sprocket on.
Turn around and head back, see if I can get back to 25mph...…..

    BANG

  • Didn't crash.
    Did have helmet on.
Did lunge forward and weight the bars rather a lot. (rotated bars)
Did have a Wmamil come up behind me and just sail past, fecking lycra clad middle aged Wanker...…. not even a "you ok" just carried on.

Managed to get chain back on.
Now it wasn't super slack when I left the house. It's very slack now.

Going to compare sprockets and see if the 15t is different in spacing/fit to chain line than the others I have.

I think next attempt at 10 TT will be back on 42x16 SS with adjusted bars and new Aero brake levers. Going to have to work things out for fixed attempt and Forum set target is a "28" minute run. I think with some fine tuning I can do a 28 without shaving legs or TT bars :)

  • Being distracted by Lita Ford bouncing around and Joan Jett on telly :)

    Anyways.
    axle slipped, threw chain.
checked sprockets anyway and they are around 2- 2.5mm more inboard than the freewheels. So optimal setting with freewheels for me.

  • Curious now.

Had a look around SJS cycles for fixed sprocket spacers.
Is there such a thing ?

Sure i have seen mention of spacing out a sprocket to dial in perfect chainline.
Going to rummage through boxes for old cassette and SS spacers see if anything in Alu fits the bill.

This may involve danger on my part.

(i don't brake with fixed, i have a rear brake for that)

  • looks like sprockets are sized around free hub cassette spacing.

I think I have some spacers from a DMR STS kit for freehubs to run SS.

Got a 2.5mm and a 1.5mm spacer that fit nicely over a sprocket, now to whip the one off the hub and see if it works on the hub...……..

  • woop woop :)

decided that 1.5mm spacer was less dangerous than 2.5mm.
Everything has engaged with threads and the lock ring is seated flush with the hub shell.

this should quieten down the low rumble that the 15t sprocket is giving me.
Might just replace the track nuts too as I have 2xpairs in my big box of random bits that "might" be handy one day :)

  • Glad you're OK, I bet that was a squarely bum moment.

I'm not sure why, but the thought of you TTing makes me giggle. I imagine you with a huge tape Walkman strapped inside a skin suit, with those orange foam pad earphones on.

  • be orange foam bar tape in the very near future :)

only sticking to the local 10mile TT :) 25's can do one.

Been sat here spinning the wheel and cranks. Chainline improved on fixed with a 1.5mm spacer but still rumbles.
This was the cheapest sprocket i found at £3.99 by cyclo and it did require some file work. I reckon it needs more buffing and filing. Still serves it purpose of cheap and chearfull. Looks like the SJS chromed sprockets are on a par with the slightly dearer Gusset ones.

  • Going to spam the steamroller thread.

So last night I went from rock on telly to random youtube feeds

This Princess Chelsea came up. I had to check today to make sure I wasn't really drunk and imagined actually watching that last night.
    Glad I don't do drugs.

  • This type of wooden bridge can get to f*ck. If it's a long one I try to zig zag, hoping the front wheel won't get caught. The only thing I hate more are tram tracks.

  • Surley fixed cogs give a chainline of 44mm FYI. I’ve got one matched to sug75s on a 111mm bb and chainline is perfect.

  • Been 2 months since i last looked here.

2 months of shite. (work/weather/universe/everything) (mostly work)

Haven't Biek for months. It's been hanging on the stand with the super duty wide DH bars and no brakes.
Wopped the the TT bar and brakes on to go get a parcel from post office this morning, queue was out the depot and down the road, phone zombies wandering about everywhere not looking where they are going or whats about to hit them (i didn't).

Only forgot to pedal about 5 times :) forgot i spaced the sprocket out, something moved so will investigate later, may just need lockring checking as i don't think i have ridden or checked the tightness from months back.....

TT bars are now off, the aero brake levers are going on and i might even break out the orange bar tape too.

parking at work is now really shite and may be easier and better for me to ride in again, and it's not super hot now.

    Maybe random photos later.

  • 2 months of shite.

    Haven't Biek for months.

    Well, there's your problem.

  • That and last big ride a chunk of forum rode with me :)

Maybe that day in June was perfection and riding solo........

  • Had shiny new bike parts lurking and not got round to fitting yet.

Must have done the weights earlier in the thread, but swapping levers was something like 100g lighter :) =faster.
