Switching legs?

  • Dunno if this question has been posed on the forum before but anyhow.

As I understand it most of us are sort of one sided with our hands and feet etc and when it comes to cycling again we tend to have a preferred side.

With me it's the right side that is the leg that I lead off with and the left is the one that I unclip first when coming to a stop.

I need to change this over so that I lead off with the left and use that side to do one legged coasting etc. However I'm finding it really hard to do, the muscle memory is too damn deep and when I come to the traffic lights or wotnot I panic and frantically switch back to the regular foot.

The reason I want to do this is to give my right knee a bit of respite.

Has anyone else managed to achieve total switch over?

  • This is something I'm quite interested in. Be good to be ambidextrous when stopping.

  • I did a poll on that when we could do polls.

Seems 25% on here start with their left leg and the rest with right.
Being able to use both is worth practising

Also interested. It's something I want to be able to do, but don't ever want to practice on the commute.

    Begs the question, why?

I can skid ambidextrously and alternate which foot I have forward when coasting on my bmx pretty happily but otherwise I'm pretty much right footed.

I don't use road cleats or anything so being so one footed has never seemed like a problem to me.

I took a hit at the battle of wounded knee...

Have you ever tried setting off on an uphill slope with a painful patella?

I thought open platform pedals may be easier but I don't ride with them.

  • Ah fair enough, makes sense.

  • Twitching legs on the other hand...
