Identify this SRAM component ?

I bought a second hand Force 10 chainset. This was on the drive side spindle . I didn't use it as it looked like it would dig into to bottom bracket outer face. I've used the chainset for a while with no issues .

Should I have this in place ? All I could think it was for was a spacer to allow for British/ Italian bb shells, though mine is British and there's no play . Can anyone confirm what it is ? I couldnt see a reference to it in the instructions online . Will my bike explode without it ?!

It's the drive side shims for the Chris King 24mm to 24/22mm GXP converter
