• I screwed up my Dawes Galaxy forks and am looking for some replacements.

The only OTP ones I have found are from Thorn, but the £240 price tag is too rich for my blood, or the Surly Cross Check fork, which looks good but I can't find in stock anywhere.

Anyone have anything suitable they'd like to sell?

Or any other suggestions gratefully received.

    Thank you.

    James.

  • Steerer length?

  • Thanks for the link. I could get that threaded right? Has anyone had that done?

    About 19cm steerer I think. I'll check.

  • Sorry not sure about threading on threadless, the internal diameter maybe smaller due to thicker tubing, then quills will not fit. I'd say new threadless headset is easier. Cane Creek do their 40 series in 1" threadless for circa £20.
Forks come up quite a lot on ebay if you're not in a rush.
The other option, cheaper than Thorn, is Steve Goff does forks £100 but I'm not sure if that price is with a frame + plus paint.

  • Thanks man. Those would work but those unicrown forks are so ugly!!

I'll hold out for something with a nice lugged crown to match the frame.

Also need to look into switching from threaded to thread less. No adverse to that - just need to investigate.

  • Surly are all 1&1/8" though?

I've been going through all this lately.

Ended up just buying a whole new bike because the fork you're looking for just appears now & again here or ebay, but you can't go looking for them.

  • I have some 1" threadless MTB forks that you could have for £20. They don't have a lugged crown though. If you're interested, I'll have to go and check the steerer length.

  • Surly def do some forks in 1", I had some and sold em. I think they only do 2 types in 1" though not th full range. I sold em as they seemed really really solid and heavy duty and I wanted more flexi lightweight forks.

I'm about to go threadless on a threaded, I think I bought a tange headset to do,it. You only need to worry about cup size fitting the frame and crown race fitting the forks.

  • From memory when I bought my threadless headset getting one with 26.4 crown race was tricky well getting one cheaply was tricky.
I'll dig out who the seller was if you're interested.

Incidentally what happened to your old forks?

  • Here's the link to the Cross Check 1" forks I'm getting. I'm in the states so shipping is not too bad:

These are threadless so I'll need to be getting a new headset and ahead stem to get it all to work. Bit of a fucker really as I really like the look of the Nitto Pearl quill stem I have. I've always thought an ahead stem on a skinny tubed bike looks a bit off.

Two things are wrong with my current forks - firstly a previous owner brazed canti studs on but they're super narrow which means I can only run some random and ratty brake on them. I'd like to be able to fit a more modern cantilever that matches my rear one.

Secondly and what is really the problem is that I am a hamfisted klutz and, while trying to install a VO front rack, managed to snap off the threaded rod that screws into the brake hole under the fork crown. This was not before it was screwed in enough to secure the front mudguard bracket underneath the steerer tube. So now I have no way to remove the guard and it has a nasty rattle. Total fuck up on my part. :)

  • Hi I have a 1" touring fork not sure right now of steerer size but can check on sat, I know its got the canti bossees not sure about anything else will let you know...

  • Spotted these on Ebay.

Looks like they will do the trick without any of the faff of going threadless.

I expect there will be something about them that is not quite right. I'll report back and maybe get a thread in current projects.

  • Thanks @littleK that's really good of you. Think I'm sorted now but I appreciate it.

  • No worries Ku-ku P but think you may regret not waiting (lol) cheers k

  • @littleK well now you got me intrigued. Would love to know what you have.... PM me? Thx.

  • And I've read lots about people putting threads on a threadless fork, but seems very difficult to find a LBS to do this. No one around here is up for it.

  • threading a threadless is apparently difficult/risky well much more difficult than extending the thread on an existing threaded steerer, as it's much easier to carry on the thread than start afresh. I think BITD when all we had was threaded steerers most shops had the tools/skills to mess with threaded forks now it seems to be much less so.
    good luck

  • Well I had no idea surly did some 1" forks, I stand corrected.

  • Hi Kuku, this is the fork I have but it doesn't have bosses for a rack, I also have the frame but it has a small dent on the rear triangle, I feel a bit of a shame to split, still haven't decided to get repaired or sale as damaged...the steerer is 218mm

If that is a genuine Jack Taylor (it certainly looks like it from the braze ons-the frame no. will soon tell) for FCUK sake don't separate the frame and forks.Even damaged that is one very desirable frame set.

Looks to be my size too, dammit!

  • Hi Kuku, it certainly is a genuine JT, can't remember exact size but about 56/57/58cm, I haven't decided what to do with it yet so watch this space (as they say) it may go on this site as a donation exchange if I don't get it repaired.. cheers k

  • Hi @littleK

That looks like an awesome frameset. It would be a shame to split forks from frame for sure, so I'd encourage you to have it fixed yourself or pass it to someone who will give it a new life and gets lots of miles out of it.
