• Phone is kaputt atm...so no pictures.

After freezing the fork for an hour and much hammer, many bang I got the bearings down. Of course Sod's law decrees the last 3mm is going to be fight number 2 :)

All parts are here, bar the disc brake mounts so...not long now!

  • @Howard

    Yesterday be like:
"freeze fork, HAMMER, freeze fork, HAMMER bearings down VICTORY!!!"
"OK just need to get the fork sock on..."
"Oh...one does not simply, I will have to take the fork completely apart after all... OK"
    "Takes out elastomer"
    "RIP elastomer 1998-2016 Foreverinourhearts"

So I need to get new fork internals after all :)

  • https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=180711;menu=1000,2,121 I am going to have to hope this fits...as the elastomer kits are "hen's teeth" atm.

The shape is the same, I think my spring is medium but the spring is in good enough shape.

BTW it IS possible to get unbranded elastomer and shape it yourself, but the shape of this bit is awkward and I have no tools to shape it.

  • Bugger. I have no idea if that fits. The elastominer provides progression in the spring rate - I think. If that's the case, you don't really need it if you aren't hammering the bike over trails and whatnot.

You can get the boot on without stripping the fork. They stretch!

  • Wow, really??? I am afraid to stretch it.

Do I need to take the bearings off?
And the collar at the bottom off?

I think it should fit I had a long hard look on t'internets. I need to take out all the old gunk too there's bit of broken elastomer. Worst case scenerio it's a tiny bit too short, but the top of the broken elastomer looks quite good, it's just cracked near the bottom.

  • Nope no need to take anything off. Bit of grease on the metal bits then just stretch it over. If you turn it inside out so that you pulling the narrow end over the collar and bearing it will just slide on.

  • Cool tx :)

Many "carry on" jokes can be made servicing these forks... :P

Will upload some pics on the elastomer once it's in.

  • Many "carry on" jokes can be made servicing these forks... :P

oh yeah. I ran through several smutty edits of that post before settling on the least smirksome, above.

  • Finally back to a working phone... Witness the damage :/

But it looks the kf241 kit definitely fits ordered today :)

  • http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cannondale-MC70-HeadShok-Piston-Assembly-Kit-HD180-/271789857389?hash=item3f47f01a6d may fit this fork too, but let's get it working before I spend more ££. Maybe I don't even like MTBing ;)

  • I'm not even sure what that ^ is :/

  • Spring with elastomer :)

The 50-60-70 mm travel headshok models seem to use it.

This goes under the air piston.

  • Noooo the thing on eBay.

  • Ooh I think it's an airpiston with elastomer shock.

    Mine doesn't have that...

  • No elastomer on piston...

  • is that......is that a hot dog?

  • :)

Elastomer, an old school anti rebound solution... Without it the spring is very boing-ey.

But like everything it has an end. Or perhaps two like a hotdog ;)

  • Ooh I think it's an airpiston with elastomer shock.

Think it's a very old school elastomer damper replacement.

  • Looking around it seems it may replace the whole lot I have for some fork models...

I need to find the manualz. Spring with elastomer on order, they only had Hard left, I need medium but I can probably poke out elastomer and put new one in. I hope.

  • Spring kit arrived. No polymer with it...only a spring.

Either I can't read or bike24 made a mistake. This is not good.

If they don't have polymer, I hope the other random thing I found in the USA fits...
goes off to look for manuals...

Failing that, make my own polymer stick as you can get it on Amazon. Buying from the USA for $50 and import/shipping fees, no tx. (plan C)

    I wanted a project...i got one!

  • Failing that, make my own polymer stick as you can get it on Amazon.

I think this is your best bet you know.

Another avenue might be an air spring upgrade from a donor fork. Check out eBay - working forks are usually about the £80 mark.

  • Not really economically viable as people seem to pay FA for these frames... you need at least 120mm travel innit? ;)

    But I'll find something :)

  • Short travel 26" bikes aren't exactly hot property at the moment, no.
