• Hi, hope this is something someone will be able to help me with, my sister has just talked to me about getting into cycling, she is soon to be moving to Bury St Edmunds with work only around 2 miles away and thought a cycle to work would by just lovely, unfortunately she is not terribly confident on a bike and is having trouble looking out cycle lessons. I would take her out for a spin but am based in Aberdeenshire so isn't terribly convenient, plus I'm in no way qualified (also I remember teaching her to drive, I don't think she enjoyed my instruction).

I'm basically looking for recommendations for cycle lessons around the Cambridgeshire area to improve her confidence on the roads, and also so she can get a better idea of what bike to buy, she has shown interest in a Pendleton Somerby which she had a try on at Halfords the other day!

Any help would be gratefully received.

  • I live in St Neots, which is the other side of Cambridge, so have only vaguely local knowledge - you might want to post in the Cambridge section of the forum too, as I am sure there are others better clued up than I am. I'm afraid that Cambridgeshire Council don't offer subsidised
training any more. But you might want to check out Camcycle for bikeability training - see link below or search the bikeability website also.

  • Great stuff, definately a start, will ctrl-c, ctrl-v this topic into the cambridge forum :)

  • Just an update, I phoned up outspokentraining.co.uk and they were super helpful, initially I was going to book one in Cambridge as that was the only one listed but they had a trainer in Bury St Edmunds who could do a more bespoke lesson and show her the ropes on her actual route to work. She had her lesson on the 10th of September which she enjoyed but found challanging, she actually teared up at one point when she had to go through a busy junction but she did it once with the instructor and once on her own.

Yesterday she cycled to work on her own for the first time, realised she forgot the key for her lock so cycled home, picked it up and cycled back to work and was very confident with it all, big whoop to the cycle training folk, highly recommended!

  • Lovely, and she shouldn't forget that she can always book another session if she wants to.

  • Awesome stuff @Bernhard hope she really enjoys it!
