• @Velocio Spam...

  • Has anyone built an outdoor gas BBQ?

  • All the ones I have seen (US biased) are brick enclosures with space for models built for that purpose. So build a space for appliance, plonk the appliance in place. They are more likely than not undercover too.

Is that what you were thinking?

  • Cheers.

Wasn't quite thinking those prices, but I guess they make sense...

Basically, I'm drawing up our terrace and my OH likes the idea of a built-in BBQ on one side. We have a cheapo gas one which actually does the job.

But like you said I've only ever seen a couple of built-in outdoor ones in Germany and the US and both were serious outdoor kitchen jobs.

Given how simple the gas part was I was wondering if there was a way of plumbing in a section of the piping.

  • I have seen some that are hard plumbed into gas mains so that would be an option. Again, that's based on my US experience so I have no idea how you would do that here, I would assume it's possible but probably ££££.

  • I don't know why but watching that made me feel sick. Never been bothered by cooking video before meat or fish ones no bother chop dice slice guts the lot all ok but that one 🤢. And I don't know why its not bad no blood or guts stuff. Strange

  • Gas bbq is just a grill. But upside down. Use your cooker indoors.

  • It's obviously not the same.

  • Yeah both of the superduper outdoor kitchens I saw were hard plumbed in - which isn't an option.

I was just thinking that it wouldn't be rocket science to have a gas section built into a traditional looking brick BBQ. Thinking about it, I could always dismantle the top off ours and bolt it in - an economy version of the ones from the link you posted.

TBH it's a little bit away. And if I was building a brick structure I'd really like a parillia with a pizza oven, but gas is so much quicker to get going it = more use.

  • an economy version of the ones from the link

Yeah - They are not cheap.

  • Go bottled, easy peasy that way... No plumbed gas here, it's what we have to do for our range stove top...

  • I wonder if you could use one of the wheely versions and then just not attach the wheels. That might lead to some cleaning or airflow challenges but you could probably work around those. Another option would be to build in a space for a reliably available BBQ model - say a weber kettle - and then roll it into place. You could always replace it if it rusts out, wears out, etc. I know it's not a gas model but the idea seems sound...in theory.

  • wheely versions and then just not attach the wheels

That's what I'm now thinking. Just need to work out how you'd make the edges adjustable in case of replacement

  • Do you have a massive propane tank on the side of the house? Or do you use smaller bottles? Genuinely curious.

  • Just little 8.5kg bottles, they last ages... Combi range, innit...

  • Plumbed in gas BBQs are relatively common here (NZ) in fancy new builds. I wouldn't do it though, as the bbq will only last ten years and you're not guaranteed to get another one which will fit the same size envelope. Just get a decent freestanding model and attach it to your gas line which you've installed. Save the built in shiz for pizza oven.

  • I BBQ’d some yakitori over proper Japanese binchotan charcoal yesterday. Jesus that stuff burns hot and long! Gave a delicious flavour to the meat too

  • finally bit the bullet and ordered a GMG smoker. Not going to do wonders for my quarantine belly.

  • I've got a hankering to try this. Made some bun cha last week and grilled the meatballs under an electric grill. They were good but I missed the smokey charcoal tang. Was thinking i might just make a little temporary charcoal grill for when it's not practical to fire up the drum barbecue. Was thinking bricks with a grill for a handful of coals and a grill basket for bun cha or yakitori on top.

  • I'm currently pondering a purchase. Which GMG did you go for? Can't decide between GMG and Traeger, can't really see any other viable options for the UK if you want WiFi control.

  • I got this little bbq for £20 off eBay. Tacky looking but it grilled 10 skewers and some veg with ease. It took a little while as you can’t crowd the grill but that’s part of the fun, eating while you’re still cooking

  • I have the Daniel Boone and it fits 6 racks of ribs on it with ease - think i've done 8 before with the shelf.

I think @dancing james has the Jim Bowie...

  • Have you seen the Masterbuilt 560? I've seen a few people talking about it and it looks pretty interesting.
