  • Got sucked into an ebay auction for a Pegoretti and ended up winning it for a reasonable price (assuming the description is real). The sizing is perfect for me, so it was tough to pass on it. Sellers photos here:

Plan is rad paint job, modern group (needs Chorus), wheels tbd and period finishing kit.

This is the first time I've dealt with an older frame, so expecting lots of wrinkles along the way.

  • Interested!

  • Very cool. I assume dual Aerospoke?

  • Amazing, great work.

Bar needing a quill stem (and nothing really wrong with that), I can't see why there should be any particular issues with it being an older frame

  • Niceness

  • Any preliminary thoughts on paint?

  • What I would really like is to find someone who can do a ciavette style paint scheme. I love this one:

Otherwise, I will probably go for something like this:

    Working from this palette here:

  • @reen? Does intricate nihilistic paintjobs.

  • Someone just offered some bits of Chorus 10sp with Athena shifters only today.

  • @skully - thanks

I'm doing a bit of research but struggling to find when the frame dates to. It seems probable that it was made shortly after he left Pinarello. The fork crown looks similar to some of the Giordana frames from the early 90s. I can't find any other frame with the Pegoretti stamp on the top of the seat stay. This is a modern stay that looks very similar:

But I can't find any frames built with it.

Any thoughts on the frame date and any info on Excell tubing greatly appreciated.

  • Email him and ask? info@dario-pegoretti.com

  • ^ that's what I was going to suggest. Also ask him about painting it too.

  • That " ciavette style paint scheme"…

  • @dammit @hugo7

I've sent an email. Let's see what he comes back with.

  • Heard back from Dario. He thinks the frame is circa 1992. He was pretty scathing about the pitting on the head tube and the touch ups on the seat stays. I'll have a look when it arrives. May end up returning this one to the seller. :(

  • He is just a bitter old man. But seriously what are the issues according to Dario?

    Hi Alex,
I'm sorry to say this but from what I see is definitely not a Banesto frame, is definitely not a Indurain frame , is definitely not a chassis of the 84/85 but probably was built in the 92/93 , is heavily and badly retouched on the seatstays and the head tube have deep sign of rust, somebody have tried to touch up some holes on the chainstays, I don't recognize my work and i can't give you more accurate information about the tubeset.

For your information, I sent a message to the seller.

"Please remove my name from the ad on Ebay."

    have a nice day
    Dario Pegoretti

  • Ouch!

  • I'm probably most worried about the holes on the chainstays. Personally I can't see any evidence of that in the seller photos, but I would of course defer to a master frame builder. I've contacted the seller, who claims this is motivated by his refusal to sell the frame to someone else. He has 100% positive feedback on thousands of transactions, so it is a weird one. I'll try and get a view from a frame builder when it arrives, then think about whether to send back or not.

  • Looks like the seller has deleted the Flickr photos...?
    Something fishy a gwan

  • Seller has excepted a return to be fair. I guess they have just taken the photos down from Flickr.

  • I'm wondering if it was bought cheap, paint stripped to see the extent of the damage and then the seller got cold feet about restoration so 'patched it up' knowing they'd make a profit on Dario's name .. Just thinking out load. Guess it's a case of seeing with your own eyes. Good luck

  • Sorry to hear about this - I'd be hugely disappointed in your shoes.
