I know plenty of people who swear by the A4 to get from London to Bath. I've done Marlborough to Maidenhead on the A4 a few times, it's not laney but it gets the job done. The A4 gets you close enough to Wells.
Alternatively I've got a vaguely ok route from Putney to Salisbury (thence Honiton where I gave up on going through Exeter/Dartmoor and on to Padstow).
https://www.strava.com/activities/163177115The old A30 is nice to cycle on too.
(The detour in Chertsey was due to a road closed by a fallen tree. Go the obvious direct route.)
Don't take that route just after Crondall and before Well (turn left to Well Road before the shitty track). It was a dried up river that I had to push the bike along not a "single track road with passing places" that the OS map said it was.
Nice cafes in Stockbridge.
(The detour at Crewkerne was to drop in on my parents, but you would have turned off by then. If anyone wants to go to Chard/Honiton or beyond then just stay on the A30. Also stay on the A30 and don't detour to Stockland, hilly insanity awaits and it's just one more big climb up past Yarcombe and Wheeeeeee down to Honiton. Much nicer.) -

The old tnrc deluxe to Bath is renowned for being one of the best rides people have ever been on... Thoroughly enjoyable 120 miles from central london to bath. Obviously you'd need to tack on a bit at the end...

Has anyone done the above route or a similar route.
Keen to cycle down to the other half parents for half term, instead of always driving and taking my bike with me.
