  • NB: stuff cut and paste'd from 2013 thread but fairly sure all deets staying the same

Date: Sessions run weekly from Sunday 2nd March, 2014

Time: Official time is 5pm - 7pm [Please note it will run at an earlier time of **4-6 **until the clocks change]

Where: Herne Hill Velodrome, Burbage Rd, Herne Hill, http://www.hernehillvelodrome.com/

Price: £6 [**I assume prices are staying same as 2013]

Equipment: Hire bikes available FoC. If you need one, pls arrive at least 15 mins before the session so you have time to pick your bike up and adjust the saddle etc. You can change pedals if you want to, but pls bring your own tools to do so. Helmets are available to borrow, but I would strongly suggest you bring your own.

Clothing: Please ensure you wear long sleeves and gloves. Padded shorts are advisable as saddles are not the best.

Beginner Inductions: If you are new to the track, this session is perfect for you. We will give you a one-to-one induction at the start of the session and take you through the dos and don'ts of track riding. Once you are inducted you will join in the general session.

Main Session: The session caters for track riders of all abilities. Riders will be spilt up according to ability and the sessions will be tailored every week to make sure everyone gets a great work out. Throughout the season we will be working on basic skills such as; group riding, holding a wheel, changes, riding the banking, sprinting and basic race scenarios. And then for those who want to, more advanced skills such as standing starts, keiren racing, match sprints, bunch races and advanced track skills.

NB: Sessions can be cancelled at the last minute due to poor weather, so I recommend to going the Facebook group for uptodate info.

Look forward to seeing you soon xxx

  • I will be attending my first ladies track session this Sunday, but I have a few questions.

I will need an induction, should I get there a bit earlier? Does it start at 4?

Also I'm a bit worried about my gearing - my current ratio is 49/18 which is roughly 70'. Is that too low for track? Unfortunately my rear wheel is only single side fixed. Should I look at sourcing a smaller cog and swapping it out before Sunday?

    Thanks
    Shelby

  • Re: induction - no need to turn up any earlier as group will be split between absolute beginners/refereshers/old hands etc

I would recommend following the advice of turning up at 4.45pm so the session can start at 5pm.

Re: gearing - pass: will wait for someone more knowledgeable to input.

Gah! Wish I could come this sunday but having to go to a gig instead. Sun 9th fo'shizz!

  • So excited about my first ever go at track on Sunday!!

  • Oh yeah, what's the dealio with locking up at HH? Is it secure or do I need to bring out the big guns?

  • You can keep your bikes in track centre, so in view at all times

  • Perfect, ta!

Don't worry too much, it should be fine. There's lots of variation on gearing between people.

Do the first lesson on that then see if you're spinning too much to keep up, if you are go higher, if it's comfortable for you then it's all good!

It'll be great to see new faces! Let's hope the weather holds up!

  • Lots of past discussion on track gearing, where you could ask the question, too, Shelby:

Note OP from track newbie andyp. :)

  • Thanks for the information everyone, much appreciated.

Pootsmanuva - are you sure it starts at 4? HHV twitter says 5pm.

Will anybody be riding from Essex Road/Kingsland Road?

  • I won't be riding from there on Sunday but I live in Dalston so I will be riding down Kingsland road to get there in the future!

  • Thanks for the information everyone, much appreciated.

    Sorry - typo deffo 5pm -

  • Does anyone know if today is still on?

I can't check the Facebook group because I don't have FB but I've been checking Herne Hill's twitter.

Rain is forecast for the next couple of hours..

  • Facebook group says nothing about cancelling the session, and there are some pretty recent posts (in the last hour or less) so I reckon it's still on.

Trundling over now to check it out.

  • That was fun, shame it was so wet and windy. Only just getting the feeling back in my feet now.

    Nice to meet you Seraphinx!

  • Wimped out because RAIN, deffo in next week.

  • HTFU! In + merino next week.... :D

Nice to meet you too xsvcx. Now I feel stupid because I should have asked you your real name >_<

  • It's just a bit further up the page ;-)

  • Track was ace! I'll definitely be making it a regular thing.

  • Sad I missed track yesterday, looks like everyone was there! Still, sunshine called and I had been out on the bike all day so was in no shape for it!

  • Are cards (or whatever it is for that shows you've done an induction) being given out at Ladies Sessions, so you can do the Track Skills sessions on a saturday?

  • I never saw any being handed out on Sunday but I was in the beginners group so maybe someone else can answer properly!

  • ^^ Me either, I've been to ladies session twice already and no induction cards have been handed out. However one of the instructors did mention that you are more than welcome to attend the track skills session on Saturday. So I'm assuming that you don't need an induction card from the ladies session because you can also complete an induction at the track skills session. I'm planning on going on Saturday anyway so will find out more then.

  • But then according to the HHV website you definitely need an induction card to be able to participate in the Saturday track skills session. Sorry, I thought track skills and Saturday induction session were the same thing..

  • They're being pretty strict about cards/inductions etc this year (and fair enough)

Seems a shame that you have to do a sat induction if you've already been doing the ladies sessions confidently, but thems the rules innit.

Either way I've not been on track for a whole year, so would feel better doing an induction so it a moo point for me anyways.
