Is this still your commuter and track bike then? Surely you won't be riding it in the wet.
I'll try my best not to ride in the wet as much as I could, but you can never tell with the British weather these days...

Sorry I meant tape and grease (helicopter tape btw)
Don't you just need shitloadsofgreaseeverywhereTM?

Can I ask where you got the wheels? I know from ebay, but from whom?
I only ask as I fancy a set myself.

That thing is sweet!
Dont drop the stem any more if you are taking it to the track. They get funny about having the drops lower than the top of the tire.
(well, at the track that I ride at anyways).

Winter training/racing wheelset rebuild:
Right, joking aside, the current wheelset is probably going to be use mainly for the summer. So therefore I will need a new wheelset ideally commuting and racing (if possible)
A while ago I brought a wheelset from Superjoe, (DA 7600 hubs laced to open pros) and they were pretty decent and bombproof, but for me they were a tad heavy and for some reason even though they were DA hubs they somehow felt a little unsmooth...

The main reason why I brought this was because of the rear double fixed which is ideal for me when I go to herne hill to not mess around changing my rear cog every weekend.
So the viable option for me personally was to rebuild the wheelset.
I've had a little talk to a lot of people on the forum on which rims and spokes to get for this build. The spoke was pretty simple, sliver cx ray spokes, so the challenge was what rim will I need to fit the hub to.

The hubs weren't smooth enough, yet they're the only bit you're keeping from the old wheels? umadbro?
For my money you should get archetypes on novatechs or something like that. A couple of hundred quid, and wide rims. What else could you want?

Or alexrims. you know it makes sense.

So for the rim we have two options that have been discussed a lot on the forum either A23 or H Son archetype rims:

Both have their benefits, but I've chosen to go with archetype rim, I know the A23 is lighter, but because my hub is 36h, I don't think weight is that important in this build, and from what I've heard that the A23 is a little more flexi compared to the archetype which is understandable from the weight saving I guess.
Also I'm going to get it built by sam at lmnh who highly recommend these rims and they remove the decal from the rim as well which is a plus.

Do you know how they remove the decal? And surely something sealed would be a better option for a winter wheelset? I don't mean to sound argumentative, just curious.

So back to the main issue: the dura ace 7600, although I brought these because of the double fixed rear, I didn't know these certain hubs weren't weather sealed and that is might have caused the hub to be a little rough and this weird grinding nose, so I've got Sam to check these hubs out and he told me that is probably need to re-grease the bearings and hopefully it would have sorted out the problem.
But whilst fine tuning the last bit on the wheelset, the grinding noise was back and it didn't look like it was the bearing anymore, but with more investigation it might actually been the axle which the previous owner might have over tighten and cause this issue....
So the solution was pretty simple, to replace the axle for the front and back, which is probably a blessing in disguise as Sam phoned up and they had the last axles in stock but also that it comes with a new set of bearings but also more importantly a weather sealant for the DA hubs. This is probably better my original idea of getting a replacement DA hub which would have been pointless due to that it co probably would have not been weather sealed too and in a year or two time it will probably have that grinding noise again...
But with this hopefully the wheelset build/overhaul is complete and I'll be picking up these bad boys at the end of the month! =)

Haha, hopefully above explained the situation with the seal hubs. For the rim I think they use alcohol to rub it off, but i'm sure if you go into the shop they'll gladly tell you! =)

Ah, I see. That'll be a nice wheelset. When's it to be finished?
-

Probably by this weekend, good timing as I need new rim tape and inner tubes! :/

I guess it that's the beauty of hindsight, but you know I have a soft spot for DA, especially how long I've been looking for a rear double fixed DA I couldn't really say no ;)

Plus I've really learnt a lot fro, the fun investigation of the dura ace 7600 hubs, and somehow improving the original build and making it new again.! :)
-

Archetypes are heavier rims than Open Pro's, no?
-
• #94
Sorry, this was my mistake, superjoe thought it was open pro rim, but on closer inspection when I got the wheelset it was actually ambrosio rims...
-
• #95
More exact, ambrosio rims super elite.

and they remove the decal from the rim as well which is a plus.
Yeah I mean you wouldn't what to many logos and brandings on a bike now would you? ;)

To be honest, if the decal lettering was better, I would have kept them... =p

DA7600 for winter wheels.... I lol'd
-
• #99
Went through last winter with 7710's and did quite a lot of miles.. no problems at all. Think it's mostly theoretical shit about the ball-bearings.
-
• #100
The 7710 are pretty much perfect in my eyes as they are weather sealed, whilst the 7600 are not, and although I probably could have used my pervious wheelset (7710 with alex rims) for the winter, I like to have the option of double fixed with a shallow profile for the rim =)
