Campag Ultra Torque: bearing puller

Posted on
  • Bought second hand UT cranks and need to change the bearings.

Found this on Ebay which looks likely: seems to have the necessary height and width and the claws look thin enough to get twixt crank and bearing.

For the money it looks to be worth a punt, but I thought I check here in case I'm missing something obvious or a proven solution already exists.

    Thanks.

  • worth a punt for seven quid, the profile has to be very shallow

  • Yeah, found a DIY guide and the guy had to grind down the prongs.

They look to be quite slim, certainly in comparison to others, but I'm prepared to wield a file...

  • what will you stop the pulling screw against? You can use the bolt on the drive side, but I don't know about the non drive side
Also what distance apart are the bolts to adjust the jaws? Will they go over the axle?

  • Yup, will need something to protect the Hirth joint and to act as a stop for the puller.

I measured 45mm from the bottom of the bearing to the end of the half-axle: there looks to be enough room for a spacer.

Good point about the bolts: looks like they'll have to be removed and perhaps a small G-clamp used.

  • let us know how you get on

  • I used a crown race drift to get the old bearings off, if you take the rings off it gives you more access (obviously), it doesn't matter if the bearing is damaged further as long as the axle 'fit' surface is not damaged. To install the new ones, I used a piece of pipe similar (loose fit) ID as the axle. The critical dimension of the pipe is to press against the inner ring of the bearing as that is the 'fit' part of the bearing on ultra torque and not the outer ring to avoid bearing damage. The support surface was a piece of softwood with a cloth wrapped around it.

  • Let us know how it goes, oh and don't forget to remove the circlip first...
