  • I think the Tune Mag hubs would look great laced to the firecrests

  • And fuck campag.

Why so much Campagnolo hate? Gen question?

  • First question: I need 18h front and 24h rear hubs for the 303s. I am veering between the cheaper option of Hope Pro 3s, or the pricier option of Royce. Any thoughts on what to go with? If I do go with the Pro 3s, silver hubs and spokes, or black hubs and spokes?

Tunes do look lovely as well as being light. Personally I'd go silver with silver cx-rays. As nice as Royce are (I have a pair) is there any point on road ones? They're fairly heavy aren't they?

On the groupset there should be some good deals on 6700 now. Near DA quality, 10 speed (so tons of deals and parts), what more do you want? Regardless of what others say I like the dark grey (even the cranks).

That said I think the new 6800 and 9000 crankset is a great concept. Admittedly it's proprietary and probably been designed to save Shimano money rather than giving you ultimate chainring flexibility. But if you want the ability to have a compact or a double it's great. I think the 6800 looks better than DA.

  • For hubs I'd just grab whatever suited my budget, and aspirations from here.

    http://www.bikehubstore.com/category-s/144.htm

Just built a second set of my 404 copies, but with the wide SL hub instead of my Tune mig. The flanges were noticably wider, the hub was the same weight, looked much the same, yet was a fair bit cheaper.

  • Hope won't release Shimano 11 speed compatible until October, and Royce only offer it in 135mm spacing. Fairly sure this is a dumb question, but am I correct that Shimano 11 speed compatible hubs are spaced for 130mm (not 135mm)?

  • they are 130mm

  • Also I've got those BHS hub SF mentioned up there, they are 11sp compatible; they come with a spacer. I will be using ultegra 6700 though.

  • Why so much Campagnolo hate? Gen question?

    Xenon-phobia

  • I have 130mm -6 ARX team and pro stems for sale - Used but VGC

110mm ARX Team for sale - Used but VGC

Also new and packaged 120mm ARX team for sale.

In summary I have too many 3t stems...

  • How much are you asking for each of the 130mm stems?

  • Xenon-phobia

    Chorus-phobia

  • No, that joke doesn't work,

  • £30 for the ARX team (red), £20 for the Pro (white) both 130mm

  • Sram and BMC were made to go together.

  • The boxy look and colours of Sram certianly works. I was looking at the yellow version of Red. The shifting action is marmite though.

  • really? I thought it was universally accepted as the best.

  • that looks tasty ^^^

  • really? I thought it was universally accepted as the best.

Honestly, having used SRAM for 8-9 months I would say that it's Ok going up the block, but easily the best coming down.
When I started using it I found that when tired on long rides I would occasionally shift down the block when I wanted to move up, but that's just user error and years of using Campag ingrained on me. I seem to have the lever throw all worked out now and can feel the bite point where the double tap kicks in so I can shift better under load etc.

I don't really know why everyone gets so worked up about groupset choice (myself in the past included) - 90% of all modern groups are excellent and work perfectly well provided they are set up properly.
Unless you have child-like hands or thumbs that don't work then it all comes down to personal preference, cost, practicality etc etc. I only moved from Campag to Sram because a) I was tired of a limited choice when it came to hubs/ interchangeable components and b) I was offered a ridiculous deal on a Red group.

  • Yeah, pretty much what Dan said. I'd be more than happy to use any modern grouppo. I really, really like the way SRAM works, but I've no experience with anything else. I also think Red 22 is the perfect group for this frame.

  • really? I thought it was universally accepted as the best.

I meant the whole double tap thing.

  • I really like Sram but it is a bit agricultural in sound compared to the other 2 big players...

Most people on here who ride fixed or single speed and enjoy a quiet drivetrain. I was always frustrated that sram was much louder despite liking the ergonomics and simplicity of double tap.

Multiple downshifts in a mechanical groupset is a big bonus and the double dump is great prior to any big hills on campag sets it apart.

  • Da 9000.

    This.

The levers shape is almost identical to the Di2 which are ridiculously comfortable with the bonus of having similar reach adjustment as SRAM.

    Worth trying out a bicycle with the newer Ultegra/DA and see if you like the levers body shape as it's slightly skinnier than it's predecessor;

    (7900 left, 9000 right).

  • You can cane half the cassette in a single throw on Super Record.

  • SRAM red looks great, but I am pretty much resolved to go DA 9000. Is there a Chris King stockist in the UK who does the 18h front hub? You can get them from http://www.wheelbuilder.com/ , but prefer not to ship.
