  • You don’t get these issues with electronic shifting.

  • Any tips for removing integrated headset bearings seized in a head tube? These ones go in a pressed split ring that sits in the frame and that will most likely be impossible to replace if I damage it.

  • The second one

It fails the "lock up the front brake and check for movement when rocking the bike forward" test.

I'll just take the whole thing apart this weekend. If the threads are fooked I'll order a new fork. Of not then I'll swap out the headset.

    I appreciate the help

  • Insert a long thin screwdriver/spoke between the slit of the bearing/cup/race and tap on it. Should see some movements or it should pop out straight away otherwise you could try to pry it out if there's enough purchase on the underside.

If well and truly stucked, pour hot boiling water on it, then ice afterward, spray with penetrating fluid and repeat a handful of time.

Contraction and expansion should help the penetrating fluid work its way in.

  • Have (inadvertently) bought a kmc chain that says "for use on Shimano cues 9-11 speed" and getting mixed Google results about compatibility of such chain with my 2 x 11 set up.

But I was just wondering why? I looked at the dimensions for other 11 speed chains and this xglide cues thing and they're the same, and when you look it up on kmc site I think it says Cues 9-11 AND 11 speed

How different can 2 chains at 1/2" x 11/128" be?

  • Isn't the split ring just a spacer between the frame and headset?

  • I have not worked much on Giant bikes but I think it's more of a pressed/bonded cup with a slit at the bottom for specifically cases like this - stucked catridge bearings.

  • Was just thinking as that could be great to solve a problem with an Ali langster headset

  • You can whack the cups out of the ali Langster and use Cane Creek IS2 bearings in them without the cups.

  • Yeah, I know. But what thickness/height bearings do I need when I don't have the top cap on top of the bearing and after market forks.

Bought a selcof IS2 bits from planet X and managed to put them somewhere safe...and forgot.

  • It be fine, they’ll work fine on 11 speed.

  • Isn't the split ring just a spacer between the frame and headset?

This, I reckon. I've seen those split spacers before. If I remember right, there's a flat in the middle and a tapered face around the edge, on both sides. I'd squirt a bit of WD and give it a bunch of taps from underneath.

  • Cool thank you 🙏

  • Mentions the top bearing being too shallow, and needing a 3mm spacer under the headset cap.
Unfortunately there is no IS2 standard depth of bearing. The range is from 5-9 mm.

  • It's not a problem to have a spacer between the collet and the dust cover

  • I’ve fairly recently done this to a tricross, same stupid headspace headset and a spacer under the dust cover sorted it out.

  • The problem I have with this particular bike (as talked about before) is that the bike is not running the original fork and the new fork needs the fork crown race to have a spacer under the collet. So the fork doesn't foul on the frame and fork.

So am looking at ways to fit a spacer under the bearings in the frame. To solve that issue.

  • Amazing Specialized design innit? ;)

  • Is the new replacement fork a keeper? Or just something you have kicking about?
If you are dead set on the replacement fork could you just file the bottom off the headtube?.

  • And yet I still end up with a Wankster in the garage within a few months of the last one leaving. And the SWorks was cheap!

  • Only fork I have for it.

Actually, I should get rid of it. Might be better to sell the wheels, frame and forks separately. Leave it as dome one else's problem.

  • To put it simply, CUES requires a standard 11 speed chain on all their CUES drivetrain, or a CUES chain, which ironically is compatible with standard 11 speed drivetrain.

  • In news: 1 of the bikes I have been asking these various questions about is now an actual functioning bike 😎

I haven't functioned it yet though because I forgot to bring my pump with me
